Found it. Last seen in Delaware in 2003, still awaiting restoration. The guy that you saw flying it was probably Gary Levits (related to the furniture chain I believe). He was not killed flying it. He was killed flying this, at Reno, on the course, unfortunately it happened right in front of me:

That's really cool information, but I am not actually convinced that's the same aircraft. The one I'm talking about was (I believe) owned by Lex DuPont (who also had an operational F4F Wildcat at the time). At any rate, it was stored in Toughkennamon PA throughout the timeframe that one seems to have been in Oklahoma. The time the new owner would have flown it out of there seems to coincide with when that one crashed on landing in Louisiana.

[Edit] Here's Lex's Wildcat: http://www.warbirdregistry.org/f4fregistry/f4f-47030.html

[Additional Edit] FOUND IT! http://www.warbirdregistry.org/p38registry/p38-4453193.html

This must have been after he flew it out of Pennsylvania. The registry says he took off the glass "droop snoot" and fitted an F-80 nose. but that's definitely the aircraft. Thanks for the lead!

The F4F's successor was more formidable, especially in the Mariana's:

Grumman F6F Hellcat...

My favorite warplane:

I wrote up a report on the Vietnam air war in the 5th grade and I already knew about planes like the Phantom, Skyhawk, B-52, etc. The first I heard of the F-8 was when I read the amazing story of Richard Schaffert - He and his F-8 Crusader were stuck in a grueling 10 minute dogfight against 4 N. Vietnamese MiG-17s and a pair of MiG-21s that tried a hit-and-run attack- and all of his weapons either missed their targets or malfunctioned. And he was unbuckled from his seat and his oxygen mask had ripped from his face due to the high Gs. He survived without a scratch. Bad. Ass. History Channel even featured it on an episode of "Dogfights."

In reply to RexSeven:

I did a report on the Air Force "Ravens" a group my dad was connected with back in Vietnam. My teacher was annoyed that most of the documents that I used for resources are not largely available to the public (dad kept EVERYTHING back then). I discussed the air war and the "other" uses of aircraft during the war aside from air to air combat.

I do have to say though my favorite jet growing up was the F14.

I found this site through hotlinked images to my webserver. Mostly they do not bother me but imagine if suddenly 1 images is used on thousands of forums. Even if each only generates 10 hits per day it can be a major drain.

If the image has no link back to me I'm paying for bandwidth and resources with no real purpose.

It's not hard to block that sort of thing but sites like these I don't mind and I ignore but since one in this thread is linked to me thought I'd add my comment.

Your comment is appreciated as your sentiment is what prompted this entire thread.

Then again, if it's not "hard" to block hot-linking, just do it. Everyone will know and you won't have to use valuable time visiting sites you'd normally ignore.

Just sayin'......

But the site itself is not mine I host it and its news and needs the ability for syndicate site to publish summaries with images linking back to the original story. So can't blanket block

After Gregory, the battle-scarred C-type (chassis number XKC 015) had six more American owners before returning to Britain in the Eighties. Three owners later, it is being offered for sale in London by RM Auctions on October 27 - the same sale as the Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5 that featured in Live in August. The price? An estimated £2.3 million.
