Would you all be offended if I said that, in general, American steam trains were ugly? Possibly brutal in appearance. May I offer up the following?
I now predict a slew of beautiful American Locomotives and an equal number of ugly British ones for my sins!
OK, here are the British ones that I am aware of:

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.... I got an idea--let's pitch steam locomotives as the only "green" rail alternative since they can burn a renewable resource (wood) and maybe we can look forward to a resurgence in big, heavy classic iron! :)
While it won't be running wood, there is a group building a brand-new Pennsylvania Railroad T-1 class 4-4-4-4 Duplex that they plan to have operating by 2030. They already have a tender, have cast some of the drive wheels and built the cab and nose for it and I believe are working on the boiler. And once it is done, they are going to try and beat Mallard's steam locomotive speed record, which I think is entirely possible. I've read accounts of PRR engineers saying they were passing 2 mile posts a minute trying to make up time before.

ALCo built the best-looking locomotives, especially the FA and PA. Pity they went out of business.
The Big Boy is on tour of the southwestern States. World's largest steam locomotive.

Being in the NE, nowhere near me. I hear that there has been a lot of automotive accidents from people rubbernecking at seeing that big bruiser pounding the rails. Which is understandable, considering that they are massive. I saw #4012 on static display at Steamtown a few years ago and the scale is mind-boggling. I'm not a big UP fan, but I respect the Big Boy, and the 4-12-2 Overlands to a slightly lesser degree. Honestly, with the sheer size and cost to operate, I kinda figured we would never see one operating again. Now someone just needs to get a C&O 2-6-6-6 Allegheny and a Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone running.
