there is apparently an "old guy" new reader who posted in open classifieds, isn't responding to follow up questions. Just dropped a number and ran.
So here is the question.
Other than misleading/wrong category posts, what is the difference between that and a canoe?
just a question.
Not much, unless he has something You want. Then you decide if its worth calling. I ignored it untill everyone started posting in it.
It's a little rude IMO but he did leave a phone number. I prefer to e-mail, text, or forum response the initial details but some people are only really comfortable with phone calls.
As mentioned, he did leave a phone #. If somebody calls and it turns out to be a bad #, then they should list it as a canoe. Otherwise there are plenty of reasons for him to just give a phone #. Maybe he doesn't have email, internet &/or cell service, or a smart phone (very possible if he is older or in a rural area). Perhaps his email provider isn't compatible with PM's from the forum or he doesn't check email very often because he doesn't use it for daily activities. Or maybe he feels more comfortable using the phone or thinks it will reduce the number of "not really gonna buy" contacts.
I know he got on the internet and posted the ad, but maybe he did that from the public library or some other computer that he doesn't have easy access to.
Dunno, I'm automatically distrustful of anyone who refuses to communicate electronically.
Same for anyone who won't post pictures for < insert reason here >
It's getting tougher and tougher for people who don't have texting or have a hosting service for posting pictures - all you young whippersnappers may be missing out on a couple great deals.

I am automatically distrustful of anyone who refuses to communicate in any form OTHER than electronically.
And I have no problem posting pictures online, but I've been on this site for 11 years and find no joy in the "hosting elsewhere" process. It's a nuisance, and I'd generally rather not play that game.
Just to clarify as a few people are defending/logical idea of the previous post.
I am asking what is the difference between that one and the run of the mill canoe.
More of a point of forum etiquette/rules with an example than a specific gripe about a singular post.
(Personally I don't care. On this forum it is his own foolishness to not monitor and answer questions. He probably would have already sold a large portion of his items had he followed up. Or at the minimum had a few good leads.)
I'm on a local that won't let you post in the classifieds until you reach a certain post count (25 I think). That weeds out most of the crap.

I get your point.
I think there is a little difference...
Most canoes are trying to attract attention and drive up click counts, with no regard for the purpose or business of this site. They hurt this site by diluting it's value, focus, and community.
I didn't see the post you are referring to, but it sounds like he is actually trying to sell a product, and is randomly posting it wherever he can. Apparently, he fails at followup. It's not the best marketing strategy, but at least he's real, has a real product, and has a real phone number. He might be an annoyance, but it doesn't sound like he is hurting this site. In a sense he is helping, by offering additional real relevant product and content for people to see, even if they are going to have to call him to learn more.
My $.02.

OK, so now I've read the thread.
I posted my further comments there.
Maybe he should join Facebook

I'll text if that's the only way … would MUCH prefer to actually talk with someone

Well I think if you are going to post on a board, you ought to at least come back once in a while, answer questions and provide some information.
I don't know if I would seriously consider what is being offered since there is so little information in the ad.

Your loss.
I can almost guarantee that virtually every great deal there ever was took a lot more effort on the part of the buyer than the expectation that the seller should have posted better info online.
Wait, people don't read the classifieds in their local newspapers anymore? One of my favorite ways to find a used vehicle is to buy a copy of the local Trading Post and look through the ads, then call the phone number and talk to a real live person. I'm automatically distrustful of anyone who refuses to communicate by phone or in person.

It's like I'm reading my own post. Who wants to text back and forth twenty times when you can talk it out in five minutes and have a pretty good idea of his honesty as well.
