just to clarify a couple things:
JVC used to be its own company, but merged with Kenwood recently. Never part of Matsushi ta
Matsushi ta is the company that owns Panasonic, Technics, and others. They changed their name to Panasonic for global business.
Funny, I've got a panasonic that is 3 years old, was their top end unit when I bought it $450 I think, from crutchfield as well, works great, I've never had a problem, has 4 preouts, 12volt to 12volt converter and a copper cage.
Though for the $150 range, you could go alpine, but your getting the bottom end model with less features. If your looking for satellite radio, hd radio, or perhaps even a ipod cable its going to bump you up another hundred or more.
I'd look at Clarion, Eclipse and Pioneer. Pioneer being the cheapest, with the most features for the best value IMHO. I do like Clarion and Eclipse, but they are slightly higher end, and unless your an audiophile, you wouldn't really care if they sound that much better then the Pioneer unit.
You won't have a problem when installing, its virtually idiot proof, plug and play. Just crimp the connections and go, you could heat shrink on top it you want but you don't need to. I'd just install speakers as well in the front doors atleast. If it were me, I'd install it all myself while she was someplace else, and just not tell her. Let her figure it out herself, just a merry christmas moment.

If she's anything like my girlfriend, two years later we'd have to have a conversation that would go somewhat like this:
"Honey, i have to tell you something."
"You're cheating on me?!?!? OH NO I KNEW IT!!!!!!"
"Uh.... no. Christmas 2010, i installed a stereo in your car."
"Oh. Uh.... thanks."
