Signed up for DSL through Centurylink (formally Embarq). I was told they would be there Friday to install and no show. I was told they would be there today and no show. We got a hold of the installer and his supervisor and didn't get anywhere. Now, they won't answer their phones. I stayed home two half days waiting on them. I've researched them and there are many, many complaints about the service of this company. Any suggestions on dealing with them? If we cancel, I'm guessing we'll get screwed with a bill.
a bill for what? You don't even have the service yet.
dsl is fail from the get go. I'll stick to my cable internet. faster and more reliable.
They've provided no service. If they want to charge you a cancellation, escalate the call. You shouldn't have to pay it.
I've done DSL tech support in a call center. I'd never have conventional DSL. I do currently have HSDSL through AT&T's U-Verse service, but I know exactly where my loop runs, and I can see my VRAD, which contains the DSLAM. My loop length is 1700 ft, which is pretty damned short.
Personally, I'd never have standard ADSL, which is what all of the other DSL providers offer. You often have a marginal line with very little overhead. On top of that, Embarq never had good marks from anyone.

I had CenturyTel (now CenturyLink) DSL and phone in the early to mid 2000's--it stank. Went out a lot and customer service was a joke. Not a funny one either.
DSL was about the only option where I live. I also rent and there is no cable for RoadRunner.
I tether my phone to my comp as I live well outside the city limits, so no cable, no DSL service, and the land line is fuzzy, so the best I can get at dial up is 14.4K. At least with my phone, I get a 3G signal and speeds topping 100Kb/s.
I have reported that my land lines were no good since I made my first call 4 years ago. After almost a year, I told Embarq to cancel my phone and went and got a cell.
My first DSL connection was through Earthlink and was quite happy with them. But I'm sure they have been bought and sold off several times by now.

broadband card or satellite ftmfbe ( be = break even). Internet providers are shady on a good day.
The one bright spot around here (Cincinnati area) is the phone company - they are beginning to run a fiber optic network, and my folks were lucky enough to be in an area that recently was brought online. Its a good service for a good price...a rarity these days with digital service providers. But if youre home is in the sticks (the problem with the immediate vicinity where I live), fi-optics will be a long time coming
I have the Uverse which is VDSL vs Adsl. "speed" is lower than cable, but throughput is much higher

Well, I'm using my new "highspeed" 3.0Mbps DSL. Cnet is testing it a .19Mbps. I can forget about downloading cool car vids off Youtube. Its like 1998 dial up all over again.
Test it on speedtest.net and post the link here.
