Just because they can do it doesn't make it a good idea.
wae said:[snip] A bigger-picture concern, though, would be that if Amazon can unlock my front door remotely, who's to say that someone else can't do that as well. How many instances do we need to see of Super Mega Corp Incorporated not being able to protect your personal data from outside attackers?
Where's that article that I recently read, about cars that can be opened and started with a "radio" that pings off of the fob sitting on your counter?
How long until hackers figure out how to ping the Amazon Key?
If I was that worried, I'd put a drop box on my porch and let them deliver to there or pick it up at the lockers that are on my normal biking route/running route. I'm not because I have a way too nosy neighbor with a helluva gun collection. Id actually pity the idiot that would try and steal from this street. I know in my 4 neighbors, there are enough guns to start a militia. God Bless Texas. Ha
With my luck my dog would scare the E36 M3 out of the delivery guy, he would trip and fall resulting in a lawsuit against me. If its that important i just have it shipped too work so i know ill be there when they deliver.
I agree with the worry about security holes. Internet connected doors are a concern. However worrying about criminals employed for delivery is ridiculous. A crowbar will get you in any door in the city in 15 seconds and it won't involve a background check and knowing you're on camera when entering the house. Why would someone choose to identify themselves before committing a crime? Seriously think that through. They can get in RIGHT NOW but instead they're going to go apply for a job and use that job to accomplish -what- that they need the job to accomplish?
Also if you think your door is crowbar proof you're almost certainly wrong. Remember the criminal cares not whether the splinter your pretty wood door or break out the glass.
How, exactly, does Amazon plan to ensure the delivery person is safe from animals, the animals are safe from the delivery person and that the animals remain inside, where they belong? Of all the things that could go wrong with this plan, animal problems seem like they'll be the most prevalent, and knowing my own felines, the most terrifying (terrifying in a can't-live-without-my-kittens kind of way
I can see the opportunity for some "hilarious" porno setups with this system. Couple are nekkid and amorous in the living room when the door opens magically and there is delivery babe/dude with a "package" for them.......maybe that's what Amazon is really selling. I wonder if we can select our delivery person based of the game being played?
Not for me, but I can see hordes of iPhone-addicted sheeple lining up for the slaughter, er... product rollout?

Officer, I found 64lbs of weed in my order!
In reply to The Artist Formerly Known as Giant Purple and/or Huckleberry Snorklewacker Cougar Mellonhead :
We'll be sure to get this 63 pounds of weed into evidence asap!
In reply to dculberson :
I have checked the 61lbs of weed into the evidence locker sir!
In reply to Wall-e :
Probably the DA's office. They are opening an investigation as to how 45lbs of weed found it's way into an Amazon package.

I like this idea. It would be a fairly easy project to add a locked foyer on my porch. In fact, it could simply be a locked room on my porch that doesn't actually lead into my house.

Yeah this seems odd to many but not everyone lives in a single family home. Apartments, row houses, small business fronts, etc. All can benefit depending on the layout of the dwelling. For single family homes it would be easy to set it up for a porch/shed/garage just as well as the house door.
I won't use it as I don't have a good layout for it. But it has value. I much prefered the trial they had to deliver to where you are. Send them your address for the specified hour and the driver pulls up to wherever you are within that hour.
To the whole extreme crimes topic. Yes some folks will seek the job and work 20 years for the chance of getting to deliver to the "right" house. Their chance of success is probably very small. But it is a rational chance to them. We are in a world where an evil man can just reportedly ask actresses to come to a job meeting and assault them. And then get them blacklisted if they resist.
Most folks I have met in personal circles who worked for ups and FedEx really tried to be professional and just wished people would treat them with some basic human respect. I have had only one issue with a delivery company called lasership they basically lied about trying to deliver packages over several months. Even caught one guy outside my door as I was headed to lunch after he already put in the handheld that I wasn't home. He didn't ring the bell and didn't even have the package in his van.

The DA has confirmed that the 30 pounds of weed in the Amazon package was just a hoax.
If I was a single apartment dweller, I'd probably be willing to do it just so deliveries wouldn't be left in the hall or on the stoop to be stolen. If they started offering a groceries service, I'd damn sure be willing, as long as they put them away when they delivered them.
I'd say 10% of the time, my house isn't locked when we aren't home, and even if it was a criminal could be in, in under 10 seconds. Honest people are going to be honest no matter what. If the rest of them want your stuff, you can't stop them. Unlocking the front door for them just means you won't have to fix a window.
These are very well made. The totes I received were too large, but I was able to sell them off one ounce at a time and made my money back plus some! Would buy again!
Phooey. I want the Stoli put in the freezer. The beer in the fridge or a salt/ice solution if it's close to 5pm. Set the oven on low to keep the pizza warm.
I do have parcel locker in my building. Yet no-one else seems to. And these silly billies let everyone in behind them.
EvanB said:I don't know what you guys are talking about. I just got the empty totes I ordered.
You should be concerned about the 64lbs of missing weed.
Well okay I'm gonna walk back my original position slightly. A trick I've learned being surrounded by professional liars this past two decades.
If ya gotta take a dump make sure to do it on the neighbors lawn.
