I'm sorry to hear this and wish you all of the best.

Nobody has said Las Vegas yet, so I'll throw that out there.

Asheville, NC has been brought up. If you decide to swing through Raleigh on the way anywhere, let me know and I'll buy you a beer. Heck, Raleigh (Chapel Hill and Roxborro, really) and Charlotte are not bad in their own rights, either.

Ouch. That is tough man.

Somewhere in Oregon is where I would be looking. Portland. Bend. Eugene. The whole area is good for what you want. Austin and San Antonio are pretty good spots too.

Santa Cruz and San Diego would be great, but are pricey.

If you don't mind the Texas heat, Austin might be what you're looking for. Plus I hear they've got a neat little track near the airport (OK, it's a berkleying awesome facility).

Every situation is certainly different, but when my ex and I split, we had already made a list we agreed upon before we each talked to our lawyers. Mine looked it over and said what would be applicable under state law, picked a number for child support that was lower than the max she would have a chance at getting, but not so low to be worth the extra cost to her to fight for it.

It took several years, but we get along pretty well now.

I would sell all I could of my stuff and head to California - then drive the entire Pacific Coast Highway while living in a cheap van and then I would head to Alaska and see how far north I could drive. That would kill a year of two - then come back and get a job.

Another vote for Asheville, Not to mention all the great finds in Atlanta are just a few hours away.

The only downside to Asheville is it is in North Carolina,. Outside of Asheville gets risky. As mentioned here before, the state government is less than - non-straight, non-white, non-conservative, friendly. You will have that problem in NC, SC, and TN.

Greenville, SC is trying to be LGBT friendly but not really the closest you are going to get is hippie. Chattanooga is the same way, but they are having explosive growth with the Automotive industry so maybe that will change as more outside influences come in.

Source: That is my home. I was raised 40 minutes from Asheville in Tn. Chattanooga was our getta way spot and lived in Greenville SC for 4 years. I moved to the Northshore of NOLA a year ago in August in and haven't been happier, but your right, not RV friendly.

I will ask my cousin her recommendation. She helps run a NFP in ATL for LGBT. She might have a better recommendation.

I won't say sorry for your situation. For experiences make us who we are. I will say that the pain will go away, you have friends, life will get better for you than it is today.

Wow, sorry about the situation, sounds like a heartbreaker. As I'm sure you know, your wife is pretty likely to regret this in the not so near future and try to come crawling back. I would put as many miles between you two as possible before that happens though.

Ann Arbor and. Lansing are actually reasonable spring to fall destinations, but it wouldn't wish their winters on you. If you are willing to brave the cold, And willing to spend sometime across the border, both Vancouver and Toronto have exactly the scene you're looking for, but with friendly supportive Canadian culture as an added bonus.

From that list it makes it seem like LGBT folks pay a tax to live their lives. Then again, California is all about taxes for living a certain type of life. Honestly, I'll take that taxes for the weather they get.

Asheville ... it's nick-name is little SF .. if that tells you anything (I live 10mi. east)

the bolded part.... NC actually elected a Republican Governor, for (I think) the second time in the last 100 yrs ... and the Legislature is also Republican controlled ... for the first time in at least 100 yrs ... not that either of these things are necessarily a good thing .. the Dems of the state have been doing nothing but whining since the "gerrymandering" of the voting district lines (they forget that they've been doing the same thing for ever)

but neither of those things (the government things) will make the LGBT thing any easier here in the Bible belt

but we do have all 4 seasons ... winter is relatively mild (the last 2 yrs of zero snow) the 2 before that were huge (for us) but very little in the previous 15 yrs

the summers aren't all that hot ... low 90's about as hot as it gets

If your looking to escape your pain by running, you won't. I spent years running from mine, never succeeded. Wherever I went, I brought my pain with me. I beat you by three days in the psych ward, but then I actually made two feeble attempts.

If you want to go, and there's really nothing holding you anywhere, spin the globe as well, not just the map.

Ward and June ain't always bad. The can give a wonderful sense so love, security and stability. Without a few in my life, I would never have lived.

Since you ain't hung up on getting help and talking to a shrink, do so. Oddly, when you let them do their job with you, they can actually help.

Love ya Curtis, always enjoy reading your posts. Pm me if you wish, and I'll let you run up my phone bills any time.

Checking in...

Wife and I are emailing regularly (I know it sounds impersonal, but we are both writers/readers) She emailed last night late and said she didn't want to lose me and was actually very hopeful which is not like her

10 years ago with our polyamory I could have been the best friend who lived in the guest room, but her slow marginalization of my emotional state means that isn't possible. I stated my case and I'm awaiting a reply. We txt and phone during the day, but the heavy stuff is best comprehended in email.

I wanted to clarify a couple things... The "requirement" of LGBT wasn't a requirement at all. As someone said, the more open a community, the more open the community. LGBT is a vague indicator of the socio-political timbre of an area. It doesn't have to be SF rainbows, just that it can't be all banjos and baptists.

Also, I'm not really running from pain with a move, I'm simply bench-dreaming to keep my mind looking forward. If I suddenly found myself dumped and had to find a new home on the spot I would feel stressed and make a hasty decision. If I have a plan (or at least some ideas and dreams) I can have that one little thing ready for d-day if it happens.

Thanks all for the ideas and support. I'm feeling much better today.
