Legalising pot won't fix the Mexican problem but it will fix some of our problems. America needs cheap labour to function and that comes in the form of "Messicans", That's why the government ignores the problem. Canada has the same issue with brown people. The immigrants do all the crappy, low paying jobs that our countries wellfare grabbing lazy berkeleyers are too proud to do. Shawn

Then explain why over 150 TONS of Mexican weed have been seized at the border in the last month? You can't exactly fault the "wellfare grabbing lazy berkeleyers" for not taking a job that the illegals have driven the wages down to nothing. The fault is the corporate berkeleyers who want to make $.01 more per head of lettuce by hiring illegal aliens to do the work. They don't have a union to keep wages/benefits fair. I'll pay 10% more for my produce to employ Americans.

Judging from what I see around here, you'll be paying MUCH more than 10% for American grown/picked produce.

There is a chain of grocery stores here that still have a union for their employees. Guess what?

Their items avg 30-60% higher than other grocery stores (excluding the high end/organic stuff) and Wal-Mart. And that's only being added in on the retail end.

So are you willing to pay 100% more for American picked produce?

If you think legalizing the happy stuff will stop any of this, you are so mistaken its not even funny. When the states stops being a glutton for drugs is the day things change.

You are completely correct.

Alcohol prohibition worked outstandingly well.

I never said legalizing would be a "bad" thing (I am against it however), and stating that alcohol and the happy stuff are anything similar when it comes to the black market is a joke and a half.

There have been numerous studies showing that labor is only 10% of produce costs. So yes, I'll gladly pay $1.10 instead of $1.00 per head of lettuce to potentially raise labor wages. Grocery store unions is a completely different arguement. Almost all of SoCal grocery stores are union BTW. The ones that aren't are actually more expensive...go figure.

Stop hiring illegal aliens and they'll stop coming. Supply and demand.

The arguement for legalization is loosely based on drug cartel income. Original proponents claimed it was 60% of thier revenue. I've read articles that bring that down to single digits. No matter what the $ value is, I don't want to support them with a single penny. But I never buy Mexican weed anyway

uhhh, If you think that bringing in more cash revenue for a company will equal higher wages retroactively for the employees who make that happen, Ive got a bridge that I want to sell you.

I still say legalize it.

That reality isn't lost on me. That's why I said "potentially raise labor wages". Let's see them hire Americans/legal immigrants first, then I'll pay more for my produce.

Where's you're bridge? I've been looking on CL for weeks for a new one...

How about we legalize Mexican immigrants if they promise to bring several kilos of weed with them?

without going further into Econ 101 than necessary, first the market would have to realize the demand for American picked produce for it to adjust its hiring practice. Only once theres a viable product category will there be picking positions that pay what Americans are willing to earn for the labor involved.

Growers arent going to suddenly just start paying the pickers more on the hopes that Joe and Jane Doe are going to pay more for American picked lettuce.

The answer to this conundrum, and others in this topic is grow yer own

Yes, because Alcohol is legal, taxed and heavily regulated.

However, compare the "black market" during prohibition for alcohol to the "happy stuff" now.

Also, I'm curious that you think legalizing it wouldn't be bad, but are still against it.

"Grow yer own" solves the legalization and immigrant issues. Imagine how great our local farmer's markets will be

Maybe we should just make it illegal to jetski in lakes controlled by violent drug overlords.

yeah, while we're at it, why don't we just give all of the southern states to mexico, they're just going to go running drugs through it anyways, lets just give up and quit.

We get to see Texas secede, become a Republic (again) and show everyone how a country should really defend/secure its' borders.

Or... have a limited Violent Drug Overlord Hunting season to help control the over-growth of the population. It worked for those pesky Buffalo.

Amen brother.

We should also invite Oklahoma. I love how they honor every states concealed weapon permit. Might as well include New Mexico so we can go snow boarding and never have to leave the "country".

Presumably Texas would have to give back any weaponry owned by the US government upon succession.
