IF you do work around machinery OR electricity, make REAL sure you can remove it. Because cutting off even a gold one is NOT fun.

Lomg story short, I completed the starting circuit on a diesel's starter motor with a gold ring. After plunging hand in ice water to numb it, I cut through with a dremel, then used needle nose to peel back the ring enough to get it off. Grossed-out everybody, but it was get it off, or lose the finger. A hospital was not an option at that point....

Sooo, whatever you get, make sure you can remove it.

Vote for the gold/ti or the geared one.

Mine used to have a pattern on it - gold ring with kind of a bamboo pattern going around - 25 years later it's just smooth with a bunch of dings and gouges.

I got this one (a couple actually, they are sized small, order larger...) (ring) It is thick. Not sure how long the pattern will last, it is stainless.

She doesn't like it, but she doesn't wear it... She does like the fact that it fits my personality.

I have a friend who has had a CF ring for a few years now, it still looks great. He bought it from a jewelry store for a few hundred dollars with a lifetime warranty for free re-sizes etc. He was a little bummed when a co-worker showed up with an identical ring she bought off ebay for $40.

If this ring does not last I will replace it with a CF ring.

Also the tungsten rings cannot be resized if you bloat in your later years...

Same reason I did not get one. I actually picked a ring out at a jeweler put it on my finger and it fit nicely. Told him I wanted that one, guy shakes his head and said it was a display ring made out of stainless steel. Mine would be made in any metal I could dream of.

25$ later I had the display ring and its been on my finger ever since.

This was the one for me. Platinum FTW, IMHO. I tried titanium or uberunobtanium or some such E36 M3. They were very cool in theory, good looking, but felt like plastic in weight. If I'm paying several hundred bucks for something, I want it to feel "beefy." Bought our stuff from the Shane Company in GA, and they've got free cleaning and lifetime warranty. I don't even have to bring in any documentation or anything. Drop it off, have lunch, pick it up.

FWIW, I've noticed that a BUNCH of my friends who've gotten married in the last few years have the exact same ring, which I think is kind of cool, but if you've gotta stand out from the crowd, maybe not so much.

been in a simple 4mm (or was it 5mm?) wide 14k yellow gold comfort band... chose it purely on it's comfort... I don't notice it's on my finger... not bad for a 10 y/o ring... although if i where to get something today it would prob be Ti :)..

Mine is basically this but done in Platinum (which is pretty heavy)
Though this captures my nautical nature it is pretty bulky and really collects the dirt/grease/grim. Because of this, I have it off quite often. It may not have been the most practical choice but it is pretty cool and gets lots of comments.

I bought a CF ring from Amazon for less than $50. I want to say a lot less but I can't recall exactly.

I've been so busy planning the engagement ring, I haven't thought about what i'd want. fairly certain it will incorporate mokume gane: http://www.google.com/m/search?site=images&source=mog&gl=us&client=ms-android-verizon&q=Mokume%20gane%20ring (literally translates to woodgrain metal iirc). I made a similar one to those from pattern welded steel dipped in ferric acid. Polish the wholething first then Acid eats the iron and leaves the polished nickel I think it was from the weld.

Pretty much exactly what I have, down to the ten years as well. A little scratched/scuffed and worn, but it's held up so far.

I had one of those for my first marriage. Frankly, it was pretty, but not very comfortable to live with. Maybe that should have been a clue.......

No one's suggested making one out of some sort of fitting off a Miata- I know there's gotta be something on the coolant side that works.

Ya know, you can wear it so it'll just look like a fancy design cut into a ring, and at the same time you can give people really painful high 5's! Also, you'll always have a clamp if you need one.

It's not much to look at, really. I just found a hole saw close to my finger size, and one slightly larger. I cut the OD first, then held the slug with vice grips while I did the ID. Cleaned up the rough edges with a file & polished it up. It's unique, the price was right, and if anything happens to it I can just make another. :D

I liked the ones with some sort of pattern or design, but it would have been scratched off pretty quickly, so I went with plain stainless.

As for the GRM angle, going to any local jewelry store guarantees that you will grossly overpay. A diamond engagement ring that you pay $5000 for is worth about $250 (if you are lucky) should you need to resell it. So why pay full retail? I have had excellent success with online jewelers and e-bay.

In twenty five years I'm on my 4th wedding band. Two of them went swimming, one got bent and had to be cut off. The one I'm on now is just a plain gold band. I've had it for about 15 years. I take a file to the edges and hit it with the buffer in the shop when the edges start bothering me. Eventually it will get get filed and buffed to nothing or destroyed and the wife will replace it.

As far as choices, get whatever you like. After wearing it for a few decades you won't even notice it's there except the times you get glue or grease under it

Artcarved FTMFW...<$200 and has a round interior so it wont hurt like hell when you death grip a 1/2" breaker bar. Titanium cant be resized, but artcarved will replace it for life if it needs resized. Bent/beatup/lost/stolen by E.T., youre outta luck. I picked Ti because its not only a great metal for automotive use, its also swanky in cycling as well.

Heres mine, and I LOVE IT!!!!!
