He realizes timing isn't great, but he and his wife planned it months ago.

Suggestions on places to get a drink, a good meal or other DC experience would be greatly appreciated! Meet him there and I'm sure he'll buy you drink.

As a life-long DC native I'd suggest avoiding Georgetown, Penn Quarter/Chinatown, and Adams Morgan. Things that are great sort of depend on your friend's interests. The Lincoln, Jefferson, WWII and Vietnam War memorials aren't like anything or anywhere else. The Smithsonian museums are amazing; American History, Natural History, Native American, the National, East Wing, Hirschorn, and Sackler galleries, the botanical garden. Be advised that close proximity to the Potomac River and storm surge may force closures around The Mall - but the museums are on the west (non-river) side so it shouldn't impact anything.

All of these are on The Mall, so park once, see a lot. Mitisam - the restaurant in The Museum of the native American - is really good, and nothing you'll find anywhere else, unless you spend a lot of time with awesome chefs on Indian reservations. For eats, DC holds it's own w/ NY, SF, LA. 2 of the best listings are linked below. Cheap Eats is sub-$25/person in this case. I'm a restaurant explorer and there's a ton of great choices. If they want a fancy dinner, the 100 Best list has no bad choices.

The one thing in DC that had the biggest impact on me was the Holocaust Museum. It is very sobering.

Potbelly Subs for a great cheap lunch. Save room for an ice-cream sandwich made in store. 2nd the monuments and museums.

Chinatown sucks, but it does contain Vapiano. This is a excellent Italian restaurant chain that has nothing to do with Chinatown at all, so I have no idea why it is there. However, it is right off the Metro and is the ideal place to meet, have some drinks, socialize, and grab a meal.

The Udvar-Hazy Museum is out near the airport, but worth the trip. It is the Smithsonian's other Air & Space Museum, and much larger than the one downtown. (FYI - Udvar-Hazy is the guy who donated millions to build the place) Space Shuttle, Concord, SR-71 and every other cool and famous plane is there.

The National Cathedral is impressive, and most people skip it.

Old Glory Tavern in Georgetown has some of the best BBQ anywhere, not just in DC, but anywhere.

The Newseum was too pricy for me (compared to all the free museums) but I have heard great things about it.

The Spy Museum is neat to check out.

In reply to trucke:

Isn't there a spy restaurant. Maybe it was a different city. I may be getting a museum confused with a restaurant... I think I am now. The realization of a self inflicted fail is bitter.
