That's what the auctions are all about right, buying the car you couldn't afford back then? If I had money, I'd jump on this. I lusted after these when they came out and still think they are cool.

I lusted after 964 C2's in my youth, everything else I liked until 16-17 was terrible.

Ferraris were my dream steed of choice, F40 and F355 to be exact, so I predict that dream is what they will remain.

My adult dream car is the humble mid-engine Porsche, which I always thought looked plain as a kid.

FD RX-7. Mine would be that dark green with the tan leather interior. Bone stock. Smooth as butter, fast as stink, sexy as hell.

Yeah.....the Ferrari 288 GTO that hung on my wall as a kid has only gotten more expensive as time has passed.

Of course I kinda wanted an 86 Mustang GT as well. (1st year of Fuel Injection)......and that is totally do-able.

Ha. Joe, My HS car was the 85 GT just like that one pictured. I chose the 85 because of the carb. Fun Fun Car.

Based on recent auction prices, I'd say lots of people lusted after these. To me, they seem to be an odd thing to lust after.

This makes sense to me, but I bet there's a bunch of people who don't agree.

Vanilla Ice had me wanting to roll in a 5.0. I finally had a chance to drive a completely stock one at an AX a month ago. I want one even more.
Other than that, if I could find a clean white Firebird Formula 350 like a friend had in highschool, I'd be tempted.

Why do you think there's a 911 in my garage? Yes, it's an amazingly amazing car, but I admit that I had the poster, too.

My dream car was always a Pantera. A friend of my grandfather had two, a '72 and a '74. I used to bug the crap out of him to go visit so I could sit in them. They're still out of reach unfortunately.

The same guy also had something called a Stallion; a Cobra replica with a twin turbo Ford 460 and 500 plus hp. It was a brutally fast car, but I still lusted after the Pantera.

Challenge Pro driver Alan McCrispin used to own one of the '84 (?) Daytona Pace Car Trans Ams with who knows how much hp, similar to the one above. It went like 160mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Solo I trim. We ran it in ESP in SCCA, but I'm sure it was of questionable legality. In fact, I drove it at a divisional and pretty much blew off a Shelby Mustang, and then it promptly dropped a valve the next morning on start up. A sad day.

So many stories with that car, like the time we were going to Hallet towing a SSC Miata (it had a class III hitch) and running 37 second miles through AK in the middle of the night (speedo didn't work). Or when I used it to move once and beat a 3000VR4 GT, while pulling a fully loaded U-haul. Awesome car. If you see Alan at the Challenge, ask him about his Trans Am.

I graduated from high school in 1991, There are very few cars from the late eighties and early nineties I feel any nostalgic lust for at all.

I could see myself paying good, but not stupid money for a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, SVO Mustang or 323 GTX. I could probably get off my wallet for one of those crazy futuristic turbo Subies, an FD RX7 or a 968 or 944. Any one of those would have to be flawless and ready to run hard.

The one car that I might loose my senses over is this: Forbidden fruit?

In my late 30's, I'm figuring out that all the cars that I thought I'd buy the second I could afford one are just impractical money pits.

I still drool over a clean Grand National, or Pantera, or 308/328, or (pretty much ANY) 60's mopar. But for the money, there are so many modern cars that offer so much more VALUE, even though they may not ooze the same "cool-factor."

I might change my tune when I hit 7 figures though.
