A friend sent me this picture. I have no idea where it was taken, but I assume not in my home range of the upper Midwest.

Usually, I'm excellent at google images, but I am coming up dry.

My intuition says this may be a Florida bird. No hard evidence at all. Any help would be appreciated!

edit: I am more interested in where it was taken than the type of bird.  Solving the mystery is my goal.

Looks like a blackbird to me:

or possibly a grackle

Looks like some sort of corvid. The coloring looks like a stellar's jay:

but the head and beak shape are closer to a scrub jay

Could be a boat-tailed grackle

Purple grackle. Pretty common in FL.

I just want to say that's a gorgeous looking bird, and the picture looks like it has chromed feet.

Thanks guys I believe it is a grackle.

I have no idea why I haven't seen one before.

I've spent an hour looking at crow pictures and didn't get anywhere. Less than five minutes and we have the answers. Thanks!

Since the bird has already been identified all I have to add is that this is a really cool app to help identify birds that I use a lot.

Yup.  Came here to say Grackle.  Hard to tell if it's a Common (purple) grackle or a Boat-tailed, but given where you are, a boat-tailed would be pretty far off course.  If you haven't heard the call of the Boat-tailed, they are super neat.  Clicks, warbles, and buzzes.  Boat-tailed Grackle Call - YouTube

I'm going to have to say that it's a male common (purple) grackle.  The tail isn't big enough to be boat-tailed, and the bill has a curve.  Notice in the picture of the Boat-tailed that Javelin posted, the beak is mostly triangular, while the picture you first posted shows a curved, pointy beak.

Sadly, with nothing else in the picture, I would say the photo narrows your buddy's location to about 45 states and all of the southern provinces of Canada.
