My polling place was also at my son's school. Took a little extra time to park. Dropped my son in his pre-school classroom, walked across the hall to the gym and cast my vote, with no waiting. This was around 7:45 am. I'm not exactly in an urban metropolis though.

About 15 minutes total. My district had a long ballot with the local offices and 13 different state or county initiatives to decide on. I took an extra minute at the end to double check I filled everything in correctly.
I thought I was boned by stopping on the way home from work, but it only added about 10 or 15 minutes to my trip.
Added bonus: There's a free skatepark at my polling place.
Got home from work at 7.10 pm, ran out to vote before they closed at 7.30, made it home by 7.20 pm.

10 minutes.
I'd prepare to vote absentee if I knew that a 5 hour wait was ahead of me.
Some of these districts REALLY need to re-think the logistics of their polling places.

I'll be doing the absentee thing next time! This is my 4th Presidential election at the same location. It has never taken more than 45 minutes before.
I have come to realize that I live in a 3rd world state, but I didn't realize we had seceded again to become a 3rd world country...
Registered absentee (I moved to a new town 2-days before election after... well... not really having a home address since last December). Super easy.
Took me all of 40 minutes...that included waiting 20 minutes for the polls to open.
