Two nights ago I couldn't sleep, so I got up to read and turned on the Late, Late Show with Craig Furgeson. After the monologue and two guests, he had on the band Foster the People, playing Pumped Up Kicks. I had never heard of them and I didn't even pay much attention at first because it started out with some heavy synthesizer stuff. I'm certainly no Hipster and this isn't really what I'd consider my type of music, but this song has been on a continuous loop on the soundtrack in my head all weekend, in spite of the dark storyline.
This is probably not the smoothest version of the song, but it's the one that hooked me:

I can't explain why you like that music either
here's another version of it...

it pops into my head once in a while 'cuz the local college station plays it half a dozen times a day.
Personally, I like the electronic remix version (which is very popular at the moment).

I really prefer the 12:30 late night shows, much more obscure music and comedians, lets you broaden your palette. I discovered the black keys on conan, that version off howlin' for you is MUCH better than the studio version.

That song had a similar effect on me. Yet, much like that one catchy tune by MGMT (Electric Feel?), nothing else by the band has managed to pique my interest.

That's the great thing about music; You don't have to like it.

"Time to Pretend" was mindblowing for me.
"Pumped Up Kicks", not so much...
The song is a ear worm. Burrows in to your head and DOES NOT LEAVE. I like the song btw.
Yeah, that's pretty catchy. Great hook.
Is it me, or does it almost have a 70s disco vibe? Some of those songs had hooks like that too. Coudln't get them out of your head.

You hipster. That is all.

Pretty catchy. Sounds like guys who grew up on shoe gazing discovered Modest Mouse, and decided to form a band of their own. Pretty good.
These guys were featured in an add on the right side of that page.
It does have a bit of a disco feel. I could see roller skating around and listening to that.
Ha! I KNEW you were going to say that song. Why? Because I'm having trouble with it, too. So much so, I bought the album.
I like it. Not what I was expecting, more electronica than I prefer, but... yeah.

I like this song and all. But thanks to this thread it has been stuck in my head ALL DAY.
Try this one. You will hate yourself.

Have any of you actually listened to the lyrics?
Its about a mall shooting...
"All the other kids with the pumped up kicks better run... outrun than my gun"
"All the other kids with the pumped up kicks better run... faster than my bullet"

Yes its a pop-y cute beat with light, child-like lyrics, but yeah the subject matter is pretty damned heavy.
In reply to turboswede:
Indeed I have. And have listened to the lyricist talk about why he chose those.

Crazy ain't it? The lyrics are dark as hell but the song is so catchy you never get past it to realize the subject matter. It's well crafted.
a song about a social outcast killing the people that are holding him down?
Manson did it better with the song "Lunchbox"..

and then they proceeded to suck..

A quick look in my closet, or more accurately, my T-shirt drawer will clear that up. I'm waiting for Grunge to come back, since I already have the wardrobe.
In reply to Woody:
If you have a specific drawer for T-shirts, that is strike 2 for being a hipster.

This is the better version, in my opinion.
