What would you do?
Something internet based, so I could live in the middle of nowhere and only have to see the UPS man once a day.
I'm still working on what.
I would sqander it on hookers and blow.
Seriously? I would get in on the ground floor of some legalized weed situation. Immediately.

This. I would love to do this and be a work-from-home dad. But, the "what" is the question...

I know some folks that own their own business and they should probably wrap it up and get a job for sanity's and their families sake and well being.

This is probably the best thing to do if you don't have an idea waiting for $40k to really push it over the top.
Industrial smoothing.
Seriously though, I'm thinking powder coating. Ties in with automotive, but you make your money powder coating wrought iron fences and gates. Get it with a few contractors, build specialty ovens, etc. On the side, powder coat bike frames, car frames etc. Have a shop big enough for a lift where you can dick around with your car when work gets slow, or when its fast enough that you have 3 employees humping the ovens 12 hrs a day while you "supervise". Fairly low overhead.
In reply to Teh E36 M3:
I know a powder coating shop for sale if you want it.
But you won't buy it for $40K.
To answer the thread title question, I'd use it as a down payment on a nice investment rental property.
But that doesn't mean I'd recommend that for someone else.

This would also be an option and a good idea.
The office park my company is in, is for sale. I've been trying to figure out a way to buy it. It would pay for itself in about 10-15 years, and then net about $14K a month. Unfortunately, financing $900K is kind of tough and my pockets aren't that deep.
breakfast and lunch only greasy spoon diner. the stupid suburban towns i live nearest to are sorely lacking, and if i closed at 1 i would be able to screw around with cars all day.
thankfully though, my business is successful so i don't need to start another one anytime soon. i love cooking but i think i'd hate to cook for a living.

With all those electric ovens your utility bill may be $40k/year.

It irks me when breakfast places aren't open at working class hours. The earlier I work, the hungrier I am for greasier food.
I would have invested in a P.B.Loco peanut butter store, but since the stores are all closed and the franchiser has gone out of business, I should have put the money in a savings account and stayed at my shop.
Hotrod/custom shop. Period.
It wouldn't be a wise use of the money, but that is my business dream. You want me to turn your 68 Caddy into a Batmobile? Great. You want me to make your 68 'Cuda into a mid-engined Ferrari-killer? I can do this. Complete custom road-race suspension for your E30? Got it... complete from scratch.

More like close at 1, leave at 3, spend the rest of the day prepping for the next day......have just enough time to eat an early dinner and drink beer because you're going to bed early.
Because you'll be back at 3am if you want to be open at 6.
Spirits. Find a local craft brewer and invest in making them a craft distiller.
Basically, a decent something to do when I retire.
