In n out, every time. Cheaper, better tasting, more options. It's also the only chain restaurant I can handle, and I miss it dearly every day I'm on the east coast.
Double double with hot peppers and grilled onions, animal fries. I'll be patiently waiting by the mailbox if you're taking orders.
5 Guys if only for the badass fries.
Don't have In-N-Outs in my region. Five Guys has great fries, though, and the burgers are sloppy enough to make up for the fact that you can't get them cooked rare. Or even medium, for that matter.
There's a 5 guys a mile from my house, and no In-N-Out, so I would definitely try the In-N-Out. I've never had it though so I can't say what I would do if they were both nearby all the time.
Like dculberson, no In-N-Out, so I would go there for the novelty.
Afterwards, I might go again. We've 5 guys, and I just don't like their burgers all that much. Yes, they come with lots of greasy fries, and I do enjoy the peanuts. But the burgers themselves, they're mashed to dry tastelessness.
Easy. In-n-out. I like their fries and burgers. I've tried Five Guys once and found it did not live up to the hype.
Our regional up-scale burger chain is Burgerville, with the original location being about a half mile from my house. Since there's no In-N-Out this far north, I'll pick BV over 5 Guys, but mostly because of the (sadly seasonal) Walla Walla Sweet Onion Rings.
I've had In-n-Out once when I was out west. It was damn tasty. Five Guys is also damn tasty and they're available locally.
I would go for In N Out just because they aren't around locally and I've never had them. But I love me some Five Guys.

neither has a turkey burger, they can suck it. i can't eat beef. so i'll take brown bag or fatburger, they both have turkey

Both. In Tucson I would usually go to In N Out a couple of times a month and Five Guys every couple of months.
I love Five Guys burgers. There are no In-n-Outs around here, but we have Louis' Lunch, recognized by the Library of Congress as the birthplace of the hamburger.
Do you want ketchup on that? Too bad.
Five Guys for sure. But there are a couple local places that I'd rather go, but they're a little hire on the price scale.
Five guys by us has gone downhill since they opened.
No In-N-Out up here. I probably eat 5 guys once a month.
We've got a small chain around here called Mugshots. They're not cheap, and most of their burgers offer some weird toppings, but I generally ignore those & just go for a cheeseburger - they're just that good. Good fries too.

The just opened a Freddy's about 3 blocks from home. I haven't eaten there yet - is it better than Steak 'n Shake i hope?
In reply to ultraclyde: I haven't had Steak and Shake but I make it a point to go to Freddy's every time I'm in Orlando. It's that good and do NOT forget the frozen custard. It's delicious.
If anyone happens to be in Cary, Illinois, stop by the "Tracks." The burgers there will blow anything else out of the water.
Anybody try Smashburger? They're big around here, but never been in one. In-n-Out is coming here, supposedly, but gotta go with 5 guys in the meantime.
We have five guys here, but I every time I see their promo pics with the grease dripping down I get a little sick to my stomach. I have tried smashburger and meatheads, but it's been at least 3 years since I've been to either. Is in-n-out the place with animal style or whatever? If so I'll just go hungry I guess.

We have a Five Guy's here too and every time I've eaten there I'd get a little sick to my stomach. It's greasy crap. It's really not that hard... This is what a hamburger is supposed to look like:
