the two methods that i know of are to remove the valve cover or when changing the oil to put a bent coat hanger through the drain hole and scrape around. But pulling the pan is best as the screen for the oil pick up is very small and the holes s/b enlarged.

I'll add that I'm practically physically in love w/ my '01 525iT.
Granted, it's a manual which at about 500 US cars for the model run is close to unicorn status. But it's great.
The sport/lowered self-leveling suspension rates are nice for street, it's got enough tire, it's quiet and very comfortable. But the vehicle dynamics aren't boring at all - you can heel-toe and if you drive it like a big Miata it can be hustled through the twisties surprisingly quickly.
And it's got that great BMW I-6, aftermarket support, and affordable parts.
Yeah, rub it in! I'm totally envious of that buy. Finding one with a manual is hard enough, not to mention that clean and well optioned. Unicorn indeed.
I'm afraid that's comparatively batting in the big leagues, and I'm looking to get a chance to pinch hit in the minors.
Early 9-5's had sludge issues, as mentioned, and blown turbos are also pretty common. They also can have an appetite for rear suspension bushings. My parents have had a few with great luck (putting 40k+/year on them), currently an '06.
I briefly had a 2000 that had 276k-ish (odo worked intermittently due to bad ABS module). The indy I work for has a regular customer with a '99 with well over 300k now.
Sheeee-it. I look for 2 years for mine, and there's 4 of them of autotrader right now as low as $4600.
Buy one!
Oof! Great color on that 528. Hope something like that is around in a couple months when I'm ready to pull the trigger.

SRS light for the seat belt sensor... I'm having M3 flashbacks... You know its a common issue when Peake sells a tool to reset the SRS system... My g/f got to where she could reset the systems (it threw evap codes almost weekly) on her car under a minute... The one thing I really don't miss about that car...
