every altima has to have the dent in the corner of the bumper

That's a Camry Corner.

Altimas are typically in much worse shape than that.

Unpainted, black waxy plastic replacement bumpers, front and rear, often displaying damage themselves, is an Altima calling card.

Kind of equivalent to the Oughties' baby blue gelcoat Wings West kit that had already been curbed twice before they could even afford to primer it.

After a surprisingly drama-free visit to the in-laws over the weekend, it rained all but about an hour of the 10-hour drive home yesterday- at times torrential enough to make me seriously consider pulling over and stopping until it passed. Only good thing was that The Bat is far less concerned about, well almost everything compared to The Dog and slept in the back seat for essentially the whole drive.

I have to use specialized ergonomic keyboards for longer typing sessions, due to a nerve injury in one arm. As a result, I'm a bit of an involuntary collector of keyboards.

My preferred brand of keyboard brought out a new model last year, and I've been very happy with it. Until about 6-7 months in, several keys stopped working. The manufacturer covered the repair under warranty and everything was good.

We're now another 5-6 months after the repair, and the same berkeleying keys just stopped working with the same symptoms again. I shall send them another very polite email, but am I very off to expect something better from a keyboard that costs more than a pair of RT660s for a Miata?

There was wildfire smoke in the air all day (which was almost a blessing in that it masked the relentless BO of the still-unwashed coworker I minor ranted about yesterday) and the heat was nasty.

All the Walmarts and Krogers close at 11 now, they used to be 24 hours pre pandemic. What's the point of a Walmart that closes at 11? I'm not nearly desperate enough to go in walmart until after midnight

For a while all our local grocery stores were closing their delis by 7:00p.

I'm just about walking in the front door of the store at 7:00p.  Guess you don't want me to buy any of that high-profit sandwich stuff, huh?

Fortunately they seem to have started staying open a little later, but they are still all cleaning everything up (c'mon, store doesn't close until 10) and give you the evil eye while you're ordering.

"In Stock" does not mean you have some parts to build the thing and it'll be a week or so until you can do that. It means you have the product in stock and ready to ship. Why is this hard for a vendor to understand? If you have to build it to spec, say so.

You're not wrong, but a storefront might not allow the buyer to place an order unless the seller has marked that item as "in stock".

I tried to get around this by making buyers click a button that said they understood that anything they ordered from me was custom-built after the order was placed, and that they agreed to wait it out. It almost worked, too.

I miss building things. I don't miss dealing with customers raised on instant gratification and discount codes.

Company forced a reboot on my computer overnight and now my browser version is too new for some of our test software.  Been spending all day trying to come up with a fix or a workaround, instead of actually, you know, getting work done.

No, I don't know what I want. I just know I don't want any of the options I have.

This dinner every night thing is by far the most annoying part of being a grown-up.

On the other hand, I had popcorn for dinner the other night because I am a grown-up and I can make that choice if I want to.

French parts vendors (OK, Most parts vendors) who just cannot bring themselves to divulge FULL specifications for thing like valves and springs.

I need more than just the valve head diameter and spring OD/length.
Without details I am not ordering.

When you repeatedly open the fridge, look, close it, open it, look, again, and again,  eventually making a choice, you haven't suddenly found something new to eat, you've simply lowered your expectations again and again until what's in there becomes acceptable.

I do it daily.

OK, how about source to find intake and exhaust valves by physical size?
I do not care about original application, just a 6mm stem I can readily modify to take the place of the old 8.02mm stem valves.
Intake around 40mm to 40.3mm head and 110.7mm length.
Exhaust 35.4mm head and 110.7mm length.
Needs to be something obtainable, Ferrea is OUT!

Stop trying to get me to engage in a work related issue at 6:30pm or later every night.  It can wait until the next day.  I'm not going to answer my phone when I'm outside with my family.  I'm also not responding to that 8 paragraph email either.

I have customers in Australia who can ship their cams to me, I make a good buck grinding them, ship them back, all for half what it would cost to have them ground locally. It's a racket in some places.

Try SI valves, they've done some custom stuff for me

What are you building?

https://seths.blog/2023/08/defending-the-apostrophe/

A rant about a rant.  Seth is always though-provoking.  Read the blog post and think along with me (or go off on your own and do whatever).

While language does change, whether we like it or not, it's helpful to plant a guidepost in the ground and say, "Here is the point of reference."  In terms of the English language that guidepost is planted.  When there is a plain reference point everyone can see what your language indicates.  350 cubic inches and 5.7 liters.  Both are established terms and my mentioning them here brought to your mind very specific things.

Seth would say, "People like us do things like this."  People here say Canoes, the Answer, Berkeley (a lot), the Challenge.  Established terms that would take a lot of effort to supplant.

To the larger point; Your and You're have two very distinct meanings.  Someone's forgetfulness or laziness doesn't change those established terms.  There is still a guidepost that lays out what those two words mean.  In relation to language there is absolute truth.  One means one.  Two means two.  Our slow abandonment of decided-on facts just makes the whole system worse.

Seth uses "pedant" to sweep this idea aside but, to paraphrase the scholar David Wooderson "It'd be a lot cooler if he didn't."

Get off my lawn and enjoy your day.

We had a going away brunch thing yesterday for our two college bound kids and our nephews. About 45 minutes in my FIL got a FaceTime call from his nieces. He and MIL spent the rest of the brunch in the backyard talking with their nieces instead of spending time with their grandkids. Then they wonder why the grandkids don't come visit them that much anymore.

Totally understandable. But even a subheading on the part's info page that the thing is 'in stock' but made to order would have been nice.
