Look at COBRA vs just getting an individual policy. COBRA isnt as useful as it once was because pre-ex going away.

It's also absurdly expensive.

As of September 8th I am in the same boat.

Medicaid is pretty good about getting you onboard once you do not have an income. I put in my application and they called me and said "We just recieved your application and we were wondering why you applied." Me: "I lost my job last week." Them: "Oh, OK, that answers all those questions. Watch your mail for some information. Sorry about your job and good luck getting a new one. Have a nice day."

Kids are covered for the next year no matter my employment situation (literately that is what the letter said.) I need to send information for me and my wife.

Man I feel for you. I am right there too.

Filed for unemployment today. Not sure I'm going to get it by the criteria you have to meet. We'll see, they will probably have someone call me for an interview.

I really don't want to go back to Cable. I really don't know what to look for.

I pray for you man, it takes 6 weeks to get the first check in Louisiana.

I got some good news today. I called a company I had been speaking with and asked if I needed to look somewhere else. They said "No, we were talking about you on Friday. Our launch date for the new facilities is November 10th and all the new staff has to be trained and running so we will be bringing you in the middle of October."

That was a load off of my mind. I hope your situation is resolved as quickly.

Wow. Just wow. You want to talk about doing things in a timely fashion, my HR rep never sent out the info that I was discharged.

SO that means my benefits that I was told ended at the end of September, are currently still active.

This also means my COBRA has been delayed. I called them today and it seems that they have not received any info about me being let go.

The only perk to all this is my courtesy services are still in place, so I still get free cable for another month.

Any benefits you can abuse at the last second? Turnabout is fair play

don't know how "cheap" an individual policy is now with AHC … but when I retired, and because of previous heart surgery and diabetes … I would have had to pay $1000+ for maybe half, closer to a quarter of the coverage on the open market … where COBRA cost me ~ 4 times what I'd been paying while working

I forgot to bring it back up, have you check with your state insurance yet? Might work out well the "extended" company plan.

With the new stuff going on, Exchanges and stuff, just getting a new policy is MUCH cheaper for me than COBRA.

Of course, we're talking a catastrophic plan vs. COBRA keeping my cadillac plan, but if i'm unemployed, i only need emergency stuff.

I know Swank does, but the rest of you understand COBRA isn't any more expensive than the plan you had, you are just now picking up your part as well as what the company was paying for.

From the numbers my company gave me, it is MORE expensive to do Cobra than it is the ACA stuff. I got better coverage and less costs going through the exchanges. Apparently since insurances have to cover everyone they choose to screw buisnesses. Ours was a company of 52 people.

But seriously, if you are unemployed look at state insurance. As soon as you get a job, cancel it. Simple as that.

Fired or laid off?

If fired, I am pretty sure you cannot collect unemployment (it's almost nothing anyway). One of the reasons they prefer to fire.

I was fired. However I was told by HR that I qualify for Unemployment because I was being let go for non-malicious reasons.

I have an interview with the unemployment office tomorrow to confirm that.

I don't know how close you are to Bloomington but they have some jobs posted on their website and will at least get you a B license. The Driver job is part time but most places that's how you get in and then move up to full time, or with the cleaner job you could always bring home funny "Guess what I found on the bus" Stories.

Or if you are near Chicago

Man... just reading this now. What a pile of suck.

Hang in there brother. Like others have said, maybe this will be an opportunity for you to do something better! Life is too short to have a suckbag job steal your soul and consume you. Keep your head up and stay positive!
