The motor has blowed up and is locking up, he is low-siding and is concerned about the guys following him that will probably run him over, they are a bigger threat than where he is going. They should notice the smoke signals but if there is points or money involved they won't check up. The one who checks up will not win, the guy who low-sides has #1 plate and was probably in front of the pack.
In reply to stroker: Not a top fueler, it's actually either a super comp or super gas dragster (note the lack of a supercharger and the transmission bellhousing shaped like a powerglide automatic instead of like a top fuel clutch pack) The car is experiencing a phenomenon known as tire shake, ironically from not generating enough wheel speed at the launch of the car. Drag racing slicks are run at very low psi, sometimes in the single digits. Because of the rapid acceleration the slicks actually grow in circumference during a run, if the wheel speed is not sufficient, the tire literally trips over itself and the result is what you see in the .gif.
So...that Firebird chose to kill itself in spectacular fashion rather than remain in the Madonna video?
Wow, most of this page is really cool stuff!! That bi-plane "landing" takes the prize. Hard to believe it was still intact.
In reply to Appleseed:
I think you can see the steam from the smell source rising from the wreckage.
