This is what I must listen to. I share an office with 17 or so engineers. Many of us have to open large documents often. It seems that since the invention of the mouse-scroll-wheel people have forgotten:

A) The scroll bar B) Arrow keys C) Page down/up D) Pressing the scroll wheel to activate the scroll mode E) Home/End keys

I'm not sure what's more annoying: The noise, or the knowledge that someone is using possibly the least effective method ever to scroll through a document/webpage. I think a scroll rate/# of line limit should be imposed before your computer disables it and says "I see you are using the scroll wheel a lot. Why don't you... USE THE GOD DAMN KEYBOARD?"

I think the problem stems from a noisy mousewheel. I'm not sure the keyboard would be any quieter. I suppose it depends on the keyboard. And speaking of mice, is anyone else glad to see the proliferation of the optical mouse? I never did enjoy cleaning mouse balls.

ha, yeah, at my last job, someone had a mousewheel with a squeak...all day long squwakzipsqueak....squeakzipsqueak...drove us batcrapcrazy. One day, that guy wasnt at work, so we tore his mouse apart and greased the wheel axle (chapstick...it was all we had in the office). It was the most satisfying McGyver experience ever!

1) Keyboard is way quieter. Instead of moving 3 lines per "zip" I can move an entire page with a single button press. The co-workers I am talking about will use the wheel to "zip" through 20+ pages at a time.

2) Hell yes. When I used to play quake in HS, I had a paper clip on the desk I would use to clean the rollers inside the mouse probably twice daily.

Im also a big fan of the option to click the mousewheel and it becomes a drag cursor that scrolls for you

I just got a Kensington Orbit trackball to replace a dying Logitech trackball. The Kensington has a scroll ring around the trackball. Nicest. Upgrade. Evar!

TBH, I never really liked the scrollwheel for the reasons mentioned. The scroll ring is silent/smooth, no notches or clicks as its rotated.

I find it handy only when moving up or down a couple pages. After a while though, it bugs the hell out of my finger so I used my arrows/page keys. Easier, quieter, faster.

What's a mouse wheel?

Pro tip: Most computers I've had my hands on come with a default mouse scroll rate of just one line per click. If they (you? ) change their rate to 20 or 30 lines, their lives will completely change forever.

EDIT: Incidentally, recently in the news there was a story about how the trend toward "open" offices has created a bunch of stress and actually stifled the open communication such layouts were designed to encourage.

You can also mash the space bar in most browsers to the same effect as PageDown.

I am spoiled by having my own office. I can't hear anyone else unless they're really mashing on the keyboard. Bwahahaha

Hmm, I may have to try the Kensington, I have been using my Logitech version for many years. I use it for the basic computer stuff and have a regular mouse next to it for computer games.

Apple Magic Mouse (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB829LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1Mg&s=topSellers). Yes, it's expensive, but it's got the same touch-sensitive scroll behaviour as a smartphone, so if you want to scroll down a document quickly you just slide your finger down the top of the mouse quickly. No moving parts, no clicking.

Mouse balls? What are those? I've been using mice with optical sensors for over 20 years. :)

I think some of you don't understand what is happening. Even if your mouse wheel is set to 15 lines at a time...

You have a document open. You are currently looking at page 3. You remember you need some other info that is somewhere between page 45 and 50. How do you get there? Scroll wheel several hundred times?
