Hey!!! Glad to hear from you, buddy. Was starting to wonder where you were. The pictures look great. Fatherhood is awesome, isn't it? You need to get the most important thing finished...the garage.

Any plans to hit the track this year?

Fatherhood is indeed awesome.

I need to draw up plans on the garage and start at it. I can do stuff without plans but once I start having vendors do stuff it needs to be written down.

No plans on track time this year, if anything the soonest will be fall CMP but even that is a "maybe." Time is, as you can imagine, at a premium this year. I've started to hit a wall here and there, though - today I managed to install one smoke/CO detector and attempt a toilet seat only to find it is the wrong color. I need some time off I think.

Carpet installed:

Some furniture:

View from kitchen facing family room:

And the living room has carpet and is coming along - just some woodwork and paint to finish. Plus needs double doors leading into the library:

I love the paneled wall and the built-ins!

Looks great! There's nothing like getting tossed into the deep in to force an expansion of your skillset.

Totally agree about the contractor-showing-up (or even calling back!) issue. We have money to spend... and apparently they don't need it. And that has just been a some minor work my mother needs done to her house. I can't wait until I start work on my house. I plan on as much DIY as the township will let me.

dculberson wrote: Cool.. I was planning on a 72" but it seems like you make a big jump in cost and weight to go from 62" to 72". So I'm planning on doing some shopping to see what the main difference is. It might be worth it to pay for the 10" of additional width. I'm hoping to get the main mowing down to an hour or so.

A friend of mine has a 72" Kubota Diesel zero-turn. He mows 3 acres. Its a beast. Heavy and hard to maneuver. Get a nimble 60" gas model and you will be very happy. I have a Hustler, but there are lots of good ones out there.

Congrats on the new property. It's really awesome!

Thanks guys!

The family room is elevated above the kitchen, and the wall between them doesn't go all the way up. So you can look out from the family room over the kitchen and informal dining area. It makes for a really neat space, we had 24 people over a couple weeks ago for dinner, and everyone fit in this one open area comfortably and had plenty of room. A 900sf room will do that I guess.

I was going to just put wood trim on top of the dividing wall - which was unfinished when we bought the place of course - but had the idea to put a bar top on it so you could eat and/or drink and still hang out with people in the kitchen and dining area.

Wall in question (I forgot to take a picture before starting, so imagine it without the ledger board and shims):

I didn't want to do a deep bar just something small to keep it from taking up too much room. I found that Lumber Liquidators sells butcher block counters for a reasonable price and at 25" deep would work well cut in half lengthwise.

Nothing slows you down like prepping for the first cut on a $270 piece of wood.

But I did it and it turned out great! I still have to put the wood plugs in the holes I made for the countersunk screws and do a final coat or two of spar urethane but it's looking good so far:

That was late last night so I was done for the night. Time for a celebratory rusty nail.

excuse the messy kitchen. ;-)

Love the butcher block! What goes in the open area next to the fridge?

Thanks! Eventually a microwave and oven will go in the opening. Hopefully soon. I just haven't had time to deal with it. Meanwhile we have the little cheapie microwave and the big oven.

Dude, if that kitchen is messy, you'd stroke out in ours right now.

Loving the house man.

There's been a ton of progress but I'm terrible at posting updates. Come see it in person!

I'm hoping to have a few GRMers over on Sunday around 3pm, on occasion of Brett_Murphy being in town from NC. You can come, check out the house and shop, and drink some beer or soda and eat some pizza. Also you can pore over my "new" truck.

The house is in Worthington, OH, close to 161 and 315. Email me at my user name at gmail.com and I'll send you the address and directions and my phone number. Let me know if you're going to make it so I know how much pizza and beer to get.
