Red Dawn ...again???

Yup, IMDB confirms that there is a Red Dawn remake slated for 2010. Ungh.

I like the idea of remaking crappy movies. I.E. make them better, but not this one. No. It was a product of the times. In much the same way Dr. Strangelove or Two Lane Blacktop was a product of there's. And without C. Thomas Howell shouting "WOLVERINES!" you know its gonna suck.

Seriously, who the hell are they going to fight?

I refuse to see it solely because Lea Thompson (who we forgot to add to the 'Ginger' list...)isn't in it.

BTW, the operation that nabbed Saddam Hussein was called "Red Dawn"

The guy that's directing has some real chops as a stunt coordinator (Bourne and spiderman movies, among others), so the action should be decent.

The bad guys are the Chinese, mostly. There were some cool propaganda poster floating around the interwebz recently that were from the movie, and they looked awesome. I know you can't tell how a movie is going to be from a single prop, but the production does have some good buzz around it.

It won't be the same without Powers Boothe to observe that "All that hate's gonna burn you up." But you can get your Boothe fix from MacGruber!

I'll watch it, but more because it was filmed here in SE MI. Funny- when I was finishing the Detroit Half Marathon- I saw the re-decorated buildings, and was kind of confused about it- thought it was something for the casinos. But then I saw the cranes, and realized that the race was interrupting filming.

I'm sure it won't be as good as the original. But at least it's in the Wolverene State?

I am kinda hoping to see if I recognize our rock wall.

Entertainment Weekly ran a few articles on who the actors were going to be, etc a few months ago. I too loved the original and I'm sure the remake will be subpar. One of the kids is now a cyber computer hacker guy?!

As an aside, EW described the original movie as "over the top patriotic." I didn't realize you could be TOO patriotic. Or is that because they fought back?

One of the greatest movies of all time. My jump master was the technical expert and also ran the jump into the stadium.

To quote a friend of mine, Drew Hastings... "some people see Red Dawn as entertainment, I see it as a training film".

I'm 30. I wonder if folks much younger than me remember much of the 80s. A big part of my childhood was wondering when the Russkies were going to bomb us back to the stone age. Truthfully, it was probably not as actually imminent as in the 60s, but the cold war was in full swing. The original Red Dawn was born of that general feeling of paranoia- different than what we have to be afraid of now. In other words, although the Chinese are the new "Red Scare-" it's not the same. Tough to make an action movie where the big bad guy is imminent financial malaise, I guess.

I'll still watch Red Dawn about once a year, whenever it comes on TBS. Same with the one with John Lithgow about what's going to happen when the crazy people shoot off all the nukes (The Day After). Both of those seem like they would have to come from a time a lot more than 25ish years ago.
