And a relatively short discography, too, with only five studio albums.
In reply to David S. Wallens :
Yeah, and a fair amount of change in sound, too.
I was probably unnecessarily harsh earlier. I was just remembering one girl in 1980-82 who would always take off the music at the party and force everyone to listen to whatever the latest Police album was, over and over.
the start of thread inspired me to listen to Outlandos, Regatta, Zenyatta, Ghost, and Syncronicity from start to finish without interruption, as I drove from MI to MD yesterday. If all you know of The Police is what you heard on the radio, you missed a lot.

Oh, totally. And we heard a lot on the radio, but few if any duds in their catalog. (Did they even have any bad songs?)

"Mother" off of Synchronicity. But I'm not sure that's "bad" so much as just kind of a harsh art piece.
There is a music critic who suggesting an interesting challenge of the truly great bands/artists who have managed a run of 5 or more consecutive great albums (not counting live albums, compilations, or soundtracks). It's a tough bar to clear. The Police are the only band I can think who hit that mark 5/5 and then dissolved.

In that case, it was probably the coda at the end of 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking?' from Sticky Fingers.
Also a fantastic song. That part was allegedly improvised in a single take.
[edit] This?

It's probably 'Behind My Camel' from Zenyatta Mondatta.
Possibly "Regatta de Blanc". That does have a bit of vocals, but no lyrics. One of my favorite tracks of theirs.
The Police are probably my favorite band to listen to running. Stewart Copeland is probably the biggest factor there. Highly rhythmic to make it easy to set a pace, but his lines are so synchopated and varied that, if I get off tempo, chances are I can make my stride match up with *something* that he's playing.
The Regatta de Blanc album in particular is great. "Message in a Bottle" is my perfect running pace song (~155bpm). Then "Regatta de Blanc" drops the tempo a couple BPM (about 150), but then gradually accelerates to push things *just* a bit (~160).
Duke, so right you are. Thanks.
Bear Barron, That is also a great song that I haven't heard in decades. Thanks also.
I'll have to make a new Spotify play list of songs I can't identify from FM radio in my car.
Not the biggest fan, though I like them. Does not hurt my feelings if they come on the speaker wherever.
They whacked out a few albums and moved on.
I didn't care for the Police until after getting Dream of the Blue Turtles and realizing what I had been missing. I have some CD boxes sets of their hits. Y'all have convinced me to get the five albums.
I bought the "Message In A Box" box set when it came out in 1993. It's all five studio albums, and I've listened to it many times over the years. I didn't know their earliest stuff at the time and I'm not sure what I like the most now. The only downside is that I have no idea what songs were on what albums :)

She hates The Police.
But what about your friend though? He did marry a Roxanne.
Big fan here of The Police. Copeland has a lot of YouTube videos available online. I also have his Klark Kent album.

Going thru our CD collection it appears my wife has "Message in a Box" as well. I stole it for the car.
I'm more of a Sting fan than a Police fan. Dream of the Blue Turtles is his first solo, I'm sure, and I like almost all if it.... Back in LP days, I had to drop the needle at the start of track 2, side 1, because I just cannot abide reggae at the best of times, but poorly done by a pasty white English man. Ooh.
Fortress Around Your Heart is a wonderful bit of music and lyric.
