My son's bathroom has a crappy ceiling that we would like to fix. After scraping off the loose chunks. We went to HomeDepot to find some paint that is similar to what his entire 4 bedroom house is painted with. The only texture paint that seems to exits now is a spray can for touch up or a additive (AKA sand). It looks like we need to apply a thin layer of drywall compound to level it before we paint. Any ideas?

It's called texturing. It's not a paint, its drywall mud shot out of a gun designed to, well, shoot mud. Different tips and spray techniques get you different textures. The paint covering it all is regular interior paint.

Many rent-all places have them. I'd YouTubes some videos to see if its something you think you can tackle.

At one time you could also buy textured rollers that you would use to apply thinned out drywall compound. They worked surprisingly well.

Check out "that kilted guy" for drywall advice on youtube.  His vids helped me out a ton.
there is a really cheap(30$ or so) texture gun on amazon that works great.

that ceiling needs a skim coat to flatten it out before texture.

Ceiling texture! Typically called knockdown, orange peel, or popcorn. That appears to be orange peel. You can buy rattle cans full of the stuff at your local hardware dispensary. Shoot it on, roll some ceiling white over the whole thing, done.

Looks like a standard 5x8 bathroom.........just skim the ceiling smooth with compound.....you will never match the texture.

That looks like my parents house. I has sand in the paint and you can't scrape it off. You have to skim over the whole thing, sand, and then texture. I don't know how to texture so I put many coats of mud on and sand between coats and then paint.

If its mud based, you can definitely scrape and then sand it down with a random Orbit.  As Volvo said, sand, skim it with mud.
