OK first off let me be clear, Saftey is more important than what I am about to say.
So, with the Ice Storm on it's way to central Illinois managment has sent all the people who live "out of town" home. Leaving the rest of us with the "townie curse"
Just because we live near work we are the ones who have to stay til the bitter end no matter how E36 M3ty the weather gets.
anyone know what I am saying?
Signed,
the bitter guw who lives 3 miles from work.
if weather is bad our entire department closes and everyone leaves earlie

I've never heard of that. Here we only get "all non-essential personnel" stay (or go) home. Never seen it done by where you live.
I'm just glad they've pushed the ice storm back from 3pm to 7pm. I should have time to drive us home from Indiana before it hits, though I'm wondering how bad tomorrow's commute will be.
We actually brought extra clothes in case we had to stay in town tonight.
I work for the Fire Department. When E36 M3 gets bad, they call me in early.
I was in a crappier boat when I used to work in the city. Being the only guy who lived an hour north in the mountains, I'd call in only to get a "Snow and ice? What snow and ice? It's beautiful here!?" at which point I'd be so pissed off, I'd drive in anyway...often in a car with no side windows and no heat
I will be driving about 300 miles in this, I do every day
How bad is it suposed to be in Ohio

OK it is almost 7 pm Central Standard Time and no freezing rain.
gesh.
We don't get that break either. We're essential personal so I'm bundling up and heading in early so I don't get stuck. If we call in sick when it snows there is no pay without a doctor's note.

It's completely the opposite where I work.
Last winter, we had a fairly nasty snowstorm. I woke up and left early for my 26-mile drive. Got to work, and we were scrambling to have enough people to start the line. All the robot techs, maintenance guys and electricians showed up, even though most of them drive over an hour each way in good weather.
The next week, one of our HR guys did some rough math. The average one-way drive for the people who showed up for work was 50-some miles... The commute for those who didn't show up "due to the weather"? Less than 2 miles.

On a similar note, when I used to work as a land surveyor, in inclement weather, the field teams working close to the office would have to head back and do paperwork, while the guys far enough away would get paid to sit in the car and wait out the rain.

This is a really bad time for the weather to come. I'm supposed to drive my elderly aunt to Indianapolis tomorrow. I don't know if we'll be able to go, pushing that back a day or two, and making me miss a dinner with my girlfriend and her parents. She will be angry if it works out that way
I don't know about Indy, but an hour north in Lafayette the weather & roads are fine. North & west of here, things were messy, but not nearly as bad as it could have been. Rather than a sheet of ice with water on top, all we got was a 1/2-inch of slush, so at least I had traction driving in today.
I'm pretty sure I'm getting a reputation with the locals as "That crazy Illinois driver who passes everybody when the weather is bad"...I'm OK with that.

LOL
Today we figured out who the "slackers" are. We had a "Diuscressionary" day. That means come in if you think it is safe.
I came in about 20 minutes later than normal and everythign was wet and slushy, but not dangerous.
So all the slackers emailed in saying "due to the weather...."
Eh, I will recepricate when the weather is nice and take a day then.

The problem is I'm almost to the Wisconsin line, and have to drive through all of the crappy weather
Just think, it could be worse: you could not have ANY snow days...

When I was in middle school, they sent us all home early every day for a week because it was so effin hot and the school didn't have AC!

You also probably had "Oh E36 M3 the T-Rex is hungry again" days off, too.
we got almost 3" of ice on my driveway and I managed to chip 3/4 of the driveway clean. It is supposed to be zero to nine above F on Sunday, so I tried to get ahead of this ice.
My neighbor that grew up in the middle east called me over to ask: "What is this stuff?" ice, not snow.
At least it gave me a chance to ask about his new BMW 5 series he just bought. Then he said the problem with the BMW's is that they are rear wheel drive and not good in the snow........
We're getting slammed with snow as I type. We're projected to get 7-10" today alone, then more on Sunday. I work in a 24/7/365 department that deals with time-sensitive data, so I have to be here. I drove 30 miles south to work today.I need new snow tires for my Scooby, it got a little tail-happy at times. At least the company is paying for a local hotel room for me to shack up in overnight.
The storms seems to have been greatly overestimated here in the north suburbs of Philly. Only rain all day, with about 15 minutes of sleet in there somewhere.

I'm in East Bridgewater, where are you? I'm just south of Brockton.
(Wait, that sounded creepy!)
At work in Boxborough (it's within pissing distance of Devens, if you've ever been to an NER SCCA or BMWCCA auto-x).

Ditto in York. I have a sales route (in a RWD pickup) so I was ready to head for home if necessary but , no...

I live 2.5 miles from work and get the same thing.
However, on nice days I walk or ride my bike, I save on driving costs and often take my lunch break at home.
So I like to think that I win.
