What is that?  A Tri-toon with a lighting package?

An 800hp beer barge? What could possibly go wrong with that? Of course, until it does, it would be awesome.

I have 3 cars and a boat in my garage and driveway, and he still has more cylinders hanging off the back of that thing than I do.

800 HP Really?

Oh, that.  Seems legit.  Surely there's no such thing as too much horsepower.

I didn't get a chance to take pictures, unfortunately, but yesterday I saw one similar to that with 5 - FIVE - big outboards hanging off the back. I don't recall the engine brand, but the cases said "500" on the side.  It was probably a 40 footer.

I couldn't afford the gas for that.

My pontoon has a 50hp on it, and I can rip down the lake at a blistering 12 mph.

... but I can run 26 miles on a 6 gallon tank.

I'm reminded of a guy who owned a manufacturing business here, who bought a SeaDoo twin engined, two stroke jet boat.  His comment?  "My Learjet gets burns less fuel per hour than this thing."

I have a old friend that has one with two 350's up on Lake Erie. I asked him why? He said,"Because I couldn't fit three of them"

He builds some pretty serious boats for people. Like twin, blown, big block totaling over 3000hp serious.

I think he told me the pontoon speed record is around 110mph.

Yep, more money than brains some times.  We're seeing similar on a large inland and totally landlocked lake in NH, I can tell you that the NH Marine Patrol is not impressed with the "lighting packages".  As someone who needs to navigate at night I can't see how they help the driver's night vision but then they're probably not aware enough to realize the implications.   I'll agree with dculberson that the amount of FU money floating around is actually a bit frightening.

The shop I work at does some marine prop repair - lots of small shallow lakes around here. The big fast tri toons and wake boats with new owners do a lot to keep us in business.

Those 500s are likely by Mercury, they have a V10 outboard rated for 500 HP.  (But wait, you can also get a V12 rated at 600 HP! )   We'll assume the 500's consume in the area of 40 gallons per hour each at full throttle, yep that's 200 GPH if you're running hard.   Gas at the marina is running $4.50 and up around here but if you can afford a $1.5M+ boat with another $250K in engines on the back I guess $900 bucks for gas is chump change.

In other news, Mercury Marine just laid off 1,700 employees.  The crazy times may be coming to an end.
