Not different at all, people stick to their beliefs in both cases. Have you ever encountered a die-hard Chevy/Mopar/Ford muscle car fanatic? They believe, contrary to any facts presented to them, that their cars were the best, fastest, most powerful cars ever to roam the earth. I generally smile and let them believe whatever nonsense they want if it makes them happy...then smoke them in one of my little "furren" cars.
Yeah, I've made the attempt at explaining to beer swilling NASCAR fans why a miata is desirable. I would have had an easier time explaining why Budweiser sux.
The car in the picture is an Evo2(badge on side and ginormous rear wing) and not the run of the mill 2.5 16V. The 16V 190 are still around I see a couple of them every week around here(Bay Area), the Evo cars are far and few between. What gets me, is high horsepower is routine from 4cylinder engines these days and people don't really appreciate what it took to make big numbers back in the day. You cannot compare the 140Hp a new car makes with the 140Hp an old car made.

I've smoked many a furren car in my Mopar pickem up.
This is why I don't drive my CRX around. It attracts too many "Car people" one of whom asked me if I was going to "stage 3" the car.
I told him that no I was not going to stage 3 it because it was already stage 7, he looked at me strangely and walked away. Thank God.
I love being a car snob. I used to be one of those guys that talked more than I knew...now I know more than I let on....
Learn by doing, folks!
Maybe they base all of their knowledge on Gran Turismo?

back in school even during my "High Performance Fuels, Electronics, and Ignitions" class we were talking about turbocharging and cam profiles/overlap and one of the kids (integra gsr owner no less) asked if a stage 4 cam would work well with a turbo honda engine.
Oh god.... i hate all that "Stage X" crap.
And the idiot companies that are marketing their crap as "Stage 2" or "Stage 5" or whatever aren't helping.
What I love is when someone tells me they want such and such sports car and they toss in "J-spec" at the end...dont they know, thats JdM y0!1

Back in the day it was the same thing, except they were talking about "3/4 race" or "full race" cams.

Wow, sounds like my office.
Everyone there thinks you need to lease or buy a car with a $300 + payment.
I stopped giving advice on cars years ago but people keep stopping by my door to talk about whatever I'm driving (Subie's, RX7, Contour SVT, etc.). All cheap & fun iron that I work on myself.
Lucky for us the true car people are only a few clicks away on this forum.
A couple of years ago, I had an argument with my ex after I dropped about $2500 on one of the Corrados (timing chain guides, radiator, and a few other things). She was upset that that I would spend that much on a "old car". I asked her what her car payment was, multiplied it by twelve, and it ended up she'd spent just over twice as much on hers that I spent on mine that year.
And of course, most years I don't need to replace the timing chain guides..

My cousins kids drive first gen AWD turbo Talons, old STIs, Corrolas and stuff.
Uncle Mike is always in the center of a bunch of next-gen gearheads/tuners seperating the truth from the internet E36 M3.

But cars are supposed to be disposable. Every 5-7 years you're supposed to go buy something new. It would be best if you financed it - perhaps roll it in as part of a home equity loan or better yet make sure you get a new house every few years too. Your country's economy is counting on you. There's jobs at stake - don't rock the boat, just drink the Kool-Aid and everything will be ok.
One of the local dealers had some sort of a lease program which had the following slogan: 'Drive new every two'.

At my dad's speed shop, we had an old Chevy cam with 4 lobes cut off and '3/4 cam' written on it in White Out. Every once in a while we'd whoop that out for some arrogant obliviot...

Now thats a nice little piece of trivia. I bet that most of the folks who are all "stage 53.4 y0 dawg!!" wouldn't believe that it was started by a Buick.

And I raaaaaaaaaage'd.
I run into this all the time when I mention that god might not be real. People cling to what they are comfortable with... they are comfortable with Jebus and Chevy 'round these parts and no stinkin' 190 was was ever worth nuthin'. 327s and the Jebus. A filibuster.
Religion is a tad different from cars though. Cars are a hobby, religion should be a way of life. It's hard to challenge people's beliefs. It also depends on how you come at them. Can we stick to cars though?

My last job started as a bunch of fantasy football fans who didn't care about cars. They just kinda chuckled when I came in with grease under my nails. But slowly, they got replaced by bikers, both sport and Harley. Then my new boss was a biker.
Twice a year we knocked off for "motorcycle safety day" and rode to some beautiful place in Colorado for lunch, then home again.
One of my NCO spent the evening wrenching on his bike. The next morning his wife was concerned his boss would be mad he hands weren't spotless (I guess this was an issue at a previous job). He chuckled and said "Honey, you've met Mental, you know better."
I am back in the land of huge offices, but I have established myself as a gearhead so our kind of peaple seek me out.
I am however an Administrator of a local gearhead board full of Honda fans, thats a different crew all together. I hear a lot of that stage four kinda stuff, or "boost it yo!" kinda comments, but I am trying to guide some of them. We got a bunch of the drifter guys to come out to an autocross. They had a lot of fun, but during the fun runs, asked if it was OK to get sideways in some of the turns. We let them since they asked, but they swore they'd be back this year.

I told my boss about a type 4 motor i found for my bug. His reply was, when you get it in I will race you, and smoke you. I told him i would catch him in the corners. (1970 beetle vs 1972 nova, all motor bla bla.) He said hi car handles well. Its all stock other then the motor....
