As I remember, the original tape of the feed was lost. The grainy version you normally see was captured off of an Australian TV feed (or something like that). The original apparently was a lot nicer.

Its been more or less concluded that the telelmetry data tapes were erased in the early 1980s to fill in a shortage. This is what the raw slow scan feed looked like pre conversion to NTSC broadcast.
I remember racing home from Road America with my dad after the F5000 race hoping to get home in time to watch him step on the moon. We made it by less than five minutes...
is this why i just watched a 2 hour "documentary" on Syfy about structures that NASA has seen on the moon? they took pictures of rocks taken from lunar orbit, added color to the weird looking ones, then stretched 15 minutes of show out to 2 hours... then they repeated it immediately afterwards..
