this was a big factor in picking my xterra. i even brought home both a 4runner and the xterra to see how each fit in the garage. my house was built in 78, and due to renovations that moved the washer/dryer in the garage, and my workbench and toolbox, its a little tight in all directions. i only have about 18' of useable length, fairly standard width for the age, and the opening is only 6' 10" iirc. work garage is even tighter at 6' 8" listed, but its actually less on one floor.
according to my realtor, it is not at all uncommon for people to put a stipulation in their offer that it is pending test fit of the family vehicle.
Our 97 'Sploder clears my garage door by about 10" in height, but I can't park it and the Mustang in the garage at the same time because of the combined width. Sure, I can pull in, but I'm stuck in the vehicle. Scarily, the 05 Mustang is the same overall LxW of my 97 explorer, give or take. And I have to touch-park the front bumber of the Sploder or the door won't clear the receiver hitch.
I was really disappointed with the new redesign after I found out it's only a taurus minivan now. I really wanted a v8 tow rig version...
