Hey, they were looking for a free place to stay, and now the local authorities are giving them the opportunity. Win-win.

Why take it to his shop. Just go take his shop. It's your right as the victim of bank mortgage fraud. Adverse possesion you know.

Abandoned/ vacant homes and buildings around here have a knack to spontaneously combust in the dead of night. Some structure fires once contained even been known to rekindle a coupla few weeks later and burn to the ground.

The removal of vacant homes from an area, especially those let to deteriorate into unlivable condition is not always a bad thing. Urban blight is a beeotch

That's known as a "friction fire". Caused by the mortgage and insurance policy rubbing together.

with all the nearly worthless derelict entire blocks in Detroit, I always thought it would be fun to get like 3 to 5 buddies to just go buy up all the remaining structures and own like a whole block or two... then set up like rally-x courses through the lots or other shenanigans. BMX/moto-x jumps, etc. You wouldn't need to "own" every lot on the block, just the inhabitable ones, the rest are just derelict empty lots anyways.

Kind of like how the crew of people revived the "thunderdrome" which was an abandoned bicycle velodrome in a park in Detroit, and started hosting underground motorcycle races there. It eventually became legit (I think?): http://thunderdrome.com/about-thunderdrome/

I think a lot of the disagreement here is because we're looking at different definitions of "ownership". I see a lot of comparisons to "squatting" in someone's car when they're not using it, etc.

Who really owns a property? What is it being used for? Many of the original defaulted loans on these properties have been sold to others. Heck, I even found a website for folks that like to participate in the process.

http://www.loanmls.com/content/sell-bad-loans.html

Is it such a stretch of the imagination that these people do not have the original debtor's interests at heart? When the loan is sold, IIRC..the responsibility for maintaining the property moves along to the lien holder. If the banks can't afford maintenance (cite: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/08/us-usa-housing-blight-idUSBRE85707320120608 ), what chance do the smaller companies who purchase the bad loans have?

OTOH, I fully admit that many (perhaps even most) squatters don't have the best interests of the neighborhood, or even the individual property at heart. Even the Reuters article I used as a citation for the neglect corporate "owners" of foreclosed/abandoned property mentions how often those properties are abused, rather than restored. We're lucky in our new neighborhood..the couple of squatters we have aren't running a prostitution ring, crack house or meth lab. They've just bought into the adverse possession thing, and whomever "owns" the thing on paper hasn't found them yet.

As far as practical advice to integraguy goes, I think Sperlo has the best advice. Lowball like hell, if you can find the "owner" (whomever bought the "bad" loan when the scammers sold it) in the first place.

In reply to EvanB:

I mowed the front yard of a house down the street from me for over a year after a foreclosure. The really disturbing thing was when the closer neighbors stopped me and asked if I was going to mow the back yard. Hell no! I am only doing the front because I have to drive by it and its value affects mine.

By the way, the 7yr statute applies only where you are in possession under color of law ie some documentation. Otherwise 21 yrs of continuous possession is required.
Were you aware that there are actually companies who charge to give you advice on how to squat?

There's a lot of stuff in there. The sides of the grill and the grill inserts are washer. The upper cowl and firewall are freezer. The curved back is a water heater. The back deck (where the rear seat will be) is made from the sides of a stove.

I could go on, but you get the point. There is some actual automotive sheet metal in the car....most of the floor panels are made from the 810 wagon's hood.
