Everyone jumps to Fit, but don't forget the Toyota Yaris. They typically sell for less than a Fit in equivalent mileage and condition. I had the 3-door, 5-speed hatchback, and I put some decent wheels and tires and a couple of TRD goodies, and it was a lot of fun to drive while getting 38mpg.
The Scion iM seems interesting too.
