I think he finally got banned when he chose to troll with "The only reason any of you don't like Obama is because you are Racist" and proceeded to argue as hard as he could that it was true.

I wouldn't mind seeing them go. I don't remember threads like that when I first started coming around in the early 2000's. They just seem angrier now. And you can always tell who is going to be on what side of an issue. I usually avoid reading them.

I think that may have been my fault, actually, and I fee really bad about it. I made a thread a long time ago about some needless, mindless killings, and how it was depressing me, and he did his usual 'devil's advocate' stuff. I very politely asked him to refrain from posting in the thread anymore... well wait.

Here it is:

I really don't believe that. I think it's time I took a break and spent more time with my family.

See?

Here is the thread. I feel very sad, it wasn't my intention.

+1000. Much of the magazine is about things that are WAY beyond my budget. I subscribed because of the forum.

Maybe we could have a "Political" forum where you can discuss this stuff or where mods send threads that get out of hand? Combine this with the ability to personalize which forums come up when you click on "Latest Topics" and those who don't want to see the politics wont.

Too much. The forum I was involved with (admittedly with many many thousands of members) went down that path and eventually wound up with dozens of boards and subboards and... KISS. Heck, people don't even know there's a Feedback board here for issues or questions about the forum itself.

GRM = cars and stuff
Sprockets = bikes and stuff
Classifieds = cheap stuff
Feedback = questions, concerns, and stuff
CMS = old stuff
Off-Topic = other stuff

That's plenty IMHO.

Seems like there was a Canadian members forum back in the day as well, which eventually got nixed.

Then maybe a "Dumpster" forum where you can go wallow in the garbage if your thread is sent away? I think making the "Latest Topics" customizable might help with the sub-forum overload.

Actually, at one time, there was GRM Canada, different than the regular GRM magazine. Didn't last long.

We get very few hostile, over-the-top arguments for all of the touchy subjects that show up on here. I think it is pretty good as is.

Maybe we can help indicate collective tolerance limits by using the little exclamation points and +1 thingies at the bottom of the posts to reward or take umbrage so the GRM overlords can decide to use the ban hammer or delete key on repeat trolling.

I fully understand that 80% of my posts will have exclamation points on them but fair is fair.

I, like many people, have strong political viewpoints.
I, like many people, think everyone that doesn't agree with me is incorrect.
I, like many people, often debate political subjects with the intent of changing the viewpoints of my opponent(s).
I, like virtually everyone else, fail at this 100% of the time, which leads me to believe that discussing politics does nothing for me but cause undo stress.

That said why can't politics and political threads be about understanding that we have different viewpoints and discussing the best possible compromise to move forward on pressing issues as a society. It can't just be my way or noway that is why we are where we are.

As somebody who has actually been staying away from here for a while because of the political threads, there is a difference between starting a thread with 'Hopey Changey blah blah blah' - 'The people of SC have spoken and they are idiots', and 'I disagree with the President's tax policy' - 'I think Ron Paul should have done better in the SC primary and here's why..'

I have been about as guilty of this as anybody but to tell you the truth, if you ban political threads I am not going to miss them.

I'm not sure I've ever had my mind changed by a conversation here, but I have learned that some sane and intelligent people have different viewpoints, and that's not usually the way people who disagree with me are represented by editorial or political talking heads.

That is, without those conversations, one's viewpoint is either being pandered to, or is the view of The Enemy in editorials pandering to other folks.

And I've certainly heard points raised here that I hadn't thought of on my own and which I had to recognize as valid regardless of whether they were enough to change my "vote" on an issue.

I don't know. In general I'm a very methodical, logical person. It's required by what I do for a living and it's part of who I am. But politics and religion are different. I search for someone to have a reasonable conversation with on both subjects, but never seem to be able to find one. And when one person says something that pushes a button with the other, it all goes to hell. I'm not sure which side of that I'm on, but it always seems to happen. As an example, when someone complains about how much money Bush spent, but ignores how much Obama has spent. Or in one sentence complains about big governement but then goes on to say all the things they should be doing. Or that we need to stop spending money we don't have, but then complain about some budget cut.
These things are said by someone lacking objectivity. It then gets me riled up and I lose mine. Then it becomes a Dem vs Repub thing, or lib vs Conservative, and everyone gets defensive.
We need to find ways to have conversations about politics without the baiting and comments that are intended to stir things up. I don't think you're going to get that on the internet.
