Bah. Only paying $1100 in US for a vaccine trial.
Judging by the behavior of Costco customers, now is infact the time to panic.
Can anybody explain to me the significance of toilet paper in the coming apocalypse ?

I still don't think it's time to panic. As for the TP, I have no idea. Nor do I understand the water part either.
If we reach the point that the Coronavirus has made enough people sick enough that water is no longer flowing from the taps...........................
Because almost anything is bearable with tp.
If you run out of tp, things are well and truly berkeleyed.
I'm wondering when we'll learn about the first case of 'rona rage' - my new word for the situation where someone kills someone else during a fight over hand sanitizer, TP, water or masks.
In reply to Catatafish :
I don't get it either.
A few months before this hit I wondered what ever happened to the hand sanitizer hype? I don't remember what the crisis was, but for a short time all the stores, government buildings, and employers were installing dispensers so I started checking to see if there was anything in them. All of them were empty.
In reply to Peabody here :
Around here, there is a population that pumps the sanitizer into their Big Gulps. They are often empty in the hospitals.

People do weird E36 M3. Northerners know this one- every time there's a snow storm, the stores run out of bread milk and eggs- like all people are gonna do is make French toast. no idea why.
I was surprised at the note at my local grocery and pharmacy that they were out of masks, hand wipes and alcohol. I jokingly asked when they were going to chain down the hand sanitizer bottles in the meat aisle.
Apparently, it's now officially a pandemic according to the World Health Organization. Wonder what triggers and switches that will turn on?

We were asked to look into adding hand sanitizer dispensers on passenger trains. Turns out the E36 M3's flammable, so that was an immediate non starter.
Turns out someone else also figured this out...

Good Lord. Hand sanitizer is berkeleying Napalm.
Also, I'll actually start worrying when people figure out I've got 600 gallons of 10.5 bleach in a tank out back and run me on it.
Honestly, the TP thing is pretty simple. If you couldn't get to the store for a couple of weeks or whatever, what would it be OK to run out of, and what wouldn't it be OK to run out of?
And if you think that stores being closed for weeks at a time is unrealistic, ask the folks in northern Italy.

Well, yeah, it's alcohol gel. Amateur pyromaniacs have known this for a long time.

Staples and Office Depot have toilet paper, or you can just steal it from work.
Rural King and Tractor Supply both have LOTS of it too. They also sell fasteners REALLY cheap

This reminds me of the ammo shortage immediately following the 2008 presidental election. All of a sudden all the bullets disappeared off the shelves. As things progressed I realized there were three types of people:
- Tin foil hat grade: These are the people that caused the shortage
- Entrepreneur grade: These people "know someone" and buy all the stuff AFTER there's a shortage, thus keeping the shelves empty (and then they sell the stuff on armslist or at gun shows)
- Consumer grade: These were the people that were really hurt by the shortage. We just wanted to put expensive holes in paper, but see above...
After a while, someone made a listing on gunbroker selling one round of .45acp for $10,000.
Good times
Hungary just declared a state of emergency. After 9 cases (or 15, depending on who you ask).
Usual stuff so far. No more than 500 people gathered outside, no more than 100 people gathered inside, we reserve the right to shut everything the berkeley down on short notice.
Interesting times.
One positive that's already coming out of this is that the requirement for more telecommuting is finally putting vestigial-Taylorist dogmas to the test at a visible scale. One great example:

I've been saying for at least a decade that this should be done to avoid shutting down cities with security measures and to reduce fossil fuel usage, and now it's finally being tried. Nowadays it's possible to have a practically photorealistic VR meeting with nothing but off-the-shelf equipment.

Hear, hear! You want to contain pathogens AND significantly reduce our carbon footprint? Stop making people who don't need to be at an office go to an office! I understand that the majority of folks have no choice, but I'm sure they'll appreciate the reduced traffic, as well.
City of Cleveland just declared a "Civil Emergency" as well. Not sure what that entails exactly. Seems like many big events are getting cancelled; hopefully the Piston Power Show still goes on this weekend!
My son has arrived home for a 3 wk 'vacation', and apparently my daughter's high school has discussed going to online classes for the rest of the year.
I was at a major downtown hospital this morning, and apparently about 20min before my meeting the edict came down that all secretaries were to wear masks and gloves. Any kind of shadowing activities, even in outpatient office areas, are verboten.
However, there was no TSA-style checkpoint set up, and as we were walking around I noted to the guy I was with that I hadn't seen any purel dispensers. They're every 50ft where I currently work. He figures it's all probably coming in the next day or so, if not sooner.
Guess I'm off to buy bread, TP, and bourbon...
I've heard that TP shortages are because TP is notoriously hard to stock. It's bulky and light. Many stores only keep what's on the shelves.
But the question is - why is toilet paper in such high demand? Is it a replacement for tissues?
I wonder if people hear "flu like symptoms" and get confused (large portions of the population still think the flu involves vomiting and diarrhea), thinking "gastrointestinal", so they think if they get COVID-19 they are going to be on the pot for days?
