I know some here are alumni of MO S&T in Rolla, they just cancelled the biggest deal in that small town:

My son is a senior there, EE, luckily(?) he is on the five year program due to a coop deal so he'll have one more celebration next year.

Hungary just declared a state of emergency.  After 9 cases (or 15, depending on who you ask).

Usual stuff so far.  No more than 500 people gathered outside, no more than 100 people gathered inside, we reserve the right to shut everything the berkeley down on short notice.

Interesting times.

We're up to 31 here in Poland.  They've canceled school for two weeks, starting on Monday, and moving to virtual lessons.

I went to the local Deli (which is really like a small corner grocery), and it was out of potatoes, nearly out of apples, fresh meat, cold cuts, cheese, and bread.  I dunno if this is because of some edict I missed, that the store is closing tomorrow, or that they just stopped stocking in the last 2 hours before closing.  We'll see what the next couple days bring.

edited for more accurate reported case number.

I think you need to have enough food and supplies so you do not need to go to the store everyday ,

and cook at home so you do not  need to go to Fast Food places a couple times a day ,

The point being is that the least people you come in contact with the better !

And I have not heard if the Virus lives on Big Macs etc :)

stay safe

Dear Lord!  I wonder if people will realize that after all the sanitizing products are gone from the shelves that ethyl alcohol can serve as a disinfectant.  I'd better get to the liquor store ASAP!

We were asked to look into adding hand sanitizer dispensers on passenger trains. Turns out the E36 M3's flammable, so that was an immediate non starter.

Turns out someone else also figured this out...

Good Lord. Hand sanitizer is berkeleying Napalm.

Yeah, we have VERY strict limits about how much hand sanitizer can be in any given room/hallway/fire control space.  The dispensers also can't be installed over switches or outlets.  Sometimes it makes it difficult to install all the wall mounted things required in a modern exam room.

In reply to pheller :

The Dancer uses TP as tissues when she's not really sick (uses the lotion Kleenex when she is), so yeah- some people may be doing that. It's probably not due to any one reason though, just a confluence of factors that combined to cause it.

When I was at the grocery store yesterday they had plenty of TP on the whole- but almost all of the mega-packs of it (16+ rolls) were notably absent. I picked up two 4-packs (one more than usual) simply because I figured it was something that would be good to always have a pack of on-hand (kind of like I try and always have a spare bag of dog food in the house).

We're waiting to see what happens with the local schools- if the main school system here closes down for the rest of the year or moves to tele-teaching, it will severely screw over The Dancer's non-profit as during the school year she runs up to a dozen outreach sessions in the schools each week for the kids- and there's no real way to do that remotely since much of it involves physical interaction with the kids. It would not only mean not having much to do but also put into jeopardy a number of grants that were given to be doing that outreach. And if the schools stop running, there's a reasonable chance that the dance studio would suspend classes as well.

I wouldn't be much affected if my work were to order everyone to telecommute as I'm already set up to do it fairly well, but it could potentially knock out both of her jobs...

Just returned from BJ's. We should be good if two-week quarantine is necessary. They have plenty of TP in stock, but are limiting to two packages per member. Even if we don't have to hole-up for awhile, at least it's not perishable stuff. Bought canned and frozen food yesterday for a couple weeks. (I think it's funny that the BJ's brand is "Berkley Jensen.")

Yeah, saw that pop up from some friends of mine who are closer to the school and still go back for events. But, let's be realistic- it's not like the school officially canceling it is going to stop people from partying...

*Nothing* lives on Big Macs (even us). That's why BK is running with their weird ad campaign showing that their food rots.

That said... I still eat them. :(

Wait, lets say they put an area on lockdown, does that mean grocery stores (and therefore access to toilet paper) will be limited?

Maybe self-checkout lines will be useful for once. Unless there are huge lines of sick people congregating.

NCAA March Madness is now going to be played with no spectators, and the Golden State Warriors game will have no fans either tonight. A friend told me the Italian soccer matches are already being played with no spectators.

Earlier watching some sport stuff, if the NBA had to do the playoffs without spectators.............just between the two LA teams would be a loss of more than $100 million in revenue.

The economic impact is going to be pretty severe it seems.

City of Cleveland just declared a "Civil Emergency" as well.  Not sure what that entails exactly.  Seems like many big events are getting cancelled; hopefully the Piston Power Show still goes on this weekend!

My son has arrived home for a 3 wk 'vacation', and apparently my daughter's high school has discussed going to online classes for the rest of the year.

I was at a major downtown hospital this morning, and apparently about 20min before my meeting the edict came down that all secretaries were to wear masks and gloves.  Any kind of shadowing activities, even in outpatient office areas, are verboten.

However, there was no TSA-style checkpoint set up, and as we were walking around I noted to the guy I was with that I hadn't seen any purel dispensers.  They're every 50ft where I currently work.  He figures it's all probably coming in the next day or so, if not sooner.

Guess I'm off to buy bread, TP, and bourbon...

Meanwhile, the guy I work with says "It's just the flu, you don't die from the flu, this is all ridiculous!"

600+ people in Italy (out of 10,000 reported cases) would disagree.

Its going to flash through the world and do what its going to do.

Avoiding it  isn't stopping it.

Sooner or later you will be exposed just like you are exposed to the Common Cold and the flu.

We don't know if we build antibodies against it.  We don't know if a vaccination is possible.

We don't know if our susceptibility to it changes as we age.   It may hit you in 10 years.

We don't know how many people had it as a mild cold, never were tested, and now have no testable evidence left to collect.

We don't know if it will mutate and come through again and again.

We don't know much other than the population most likely to die of the flu is also most likely to die from this Corona virus.

A lot more numbers need to happen before any realistic statistics can be assembled.

Need at least 60% alcohol to properly disinfect, from what I remember.  Make sure you don't grab any 80 proof!

You really don't have to go farther then that. A LOT of people die from the flu!

At least 14,000 people have died and 250,000 have already been hospitalized during the 2019-2020 flu season, according to estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

FWIW, I'm using this site that's sponsored by Johns Hopkins for metrics as it's nearly real time and esthetics are very good.

I'm interested in watching the growth rate which I estimated the baseline to be 1.23 (23% day over day increase in confirmed cases).

Today is a bad day as we're now at 1,135 confirmed cases which I believe will be well above the 1.23 number.

And if I wasn't ethical and all that - I would make a killing selling fake glasses that allow people to spot those bad little virus particles floating in the air so you can dodge them before they stick to you. Order now while supplies last! Just 1 easy payment of $4.99 + $23 shipping and handling. Allow 2-20 days for delivery - as the glasses are made in Wuhan, PRC. cheeky

Since made in Wuhan then play into the conspiracy theories with statements like, "same glasses as worn by the Wuhan Bio-Lab workers that the virus leaked out of."
