Told my MIL this very thing about 10 years ago but apparently, I don't know anything.

A few months later she was wanting to sue her investment people for "losing all her money".

I've carried a small Purell bottle for years and always wear gloves driving unfamiliar vehicles.  Of all the things that have been coughed on me the only serious thing I ever caught was something that made the skin peel off my hands for weeks.  It never got diagnosed but I likely got it from a bus.  Since then I've been careful about what I touch.

That's why I was never concerned about Y2K - it was a problem easily fixed by throwing money at it.  America is really good at fixing those kinds of problems.

And yet poverty and food insecurity is still a very real problem. Not to mention racism, sexism, ageism, other-ism's, etc.

Also, Viagra and Cialis are totally covered by insurance, but birth-control pills are at the mercy of your employer's religious beliefs.

"Our" priorities are seriously skewed in favor of not fixing problems, only making money off them.

Just heard the latest news release from the CDC.  "Americans shouldn't worry right now but be prepared for things to get much worse quickly."

 Thanks, that's helpful. frown

Interestingly enough- I live dead smack in the middle of tourist hell, and no one is panicking yet. Masks have started to move at the store, but disney hasnt started rolling out hand sanitizer stations yet like they did with Zika. I'll get REALLY worried when they close the China pavilion at Epcot.

My wife works in a major metro hospital. Said they haven't advised staff of anything but she predicts she may get stuck working a lot. Especially if other staff with young kids don't come to work because the schools get closed.

WOW, biased much? Although there are many problems that do not get fixed, that is political stumping that has absolutely nothing to do with the topics of discussion; that makes me believe someone is just repeating rhetoric without putting time into using thought to find solutions. And that actually causes those very same problems to even get worse, giving "They Said" even more power to lead the sheep around. "They Said" loves that.

Back on topic. I think a safe plan is to always prepare as much as you are comfortable with, and take things as they come.  "Plan for the worst, Hope for the best" ... and take neither to extremes!

Damn straight I'm "biased" when I know that poverty, food insecurity, sexism, racism, etc. affect far too many people in our country, let alone the world.

It's not "biased" to recognize that my former employer would willingly buy pills to get my dick hard, but deny my wife birth-control because a for-profit CORPORATION somehow can have a "religious" belief.

If you can explain how a legal entity created specifically to separate personal liability from corporate liability, can have a human religious belief, when it's sole goal and purpose is to mine, process, package and sell bentonite...then I might be willing to reconsider.

If you think that's politics, then you recognize that ALL of human interaction is politics and not just the election cycle.

I don't for a minute believe that the gov or corporations have your, mine or anybody else's best interests in mind. Neither do I believe that anybody will come up with a cure for ANY disease when they can milk our wallets dry for a treatment. That's not how this world works.

It's bloody foolish to think that a pandemic can't happen, as if we've "scienced" our way out of problems. We can't even solve some of humanity's basic problems, yet a bunch of first-world car-guys seem to think that showing concern for an infectious virus with a higher-than-average fatality rate is just fear-mongering...not a biological/evolutionary response to disease. Revulsion and disgust are known psychological responses that instinctively protect us from potentially deadly things.

Just because it hasn't spread here YET, doesn't mean it's not something to take concern with and prepare for. And god forbid anybody on this forum catch it and die, because there are more than a few mouthpieces posting on this board who should possibly regret their antagonistic position.

Somebody has a bad day and asks for support? We're all over that.

Somebody is worried about a disease that's spreading faster than Spanish Flu? BIG CRY-BABY SCAREDY-CAT!

I don't understand people who claim to be rational, but have zero empathy for something THEY deem to be unimportant. So you can take YOUR politics and tuck it back in the dark crevice from which you excavated it.

But corporations are people.. They certainly seem to have more rights than I do.. (They definitely have more money, guess money = rights = personhood) devil   The way this has been handled so far, by all parties involved, seems to me to have very little to do with "science" and everything to do with flag-waving politics.  IMHO the decision to pull our people (Americans) out of hot zones and repatriate them after deliberating about it for weeks, without a clear idea of what the incubation period really is and how this thing actually spreads is one of the dumbest decisions in recent history, if you're really concerned about stopping the spread of this thing.   Take whatever means you deem sufficient to protect yourself and loved ones (without hurting anyone else).  Not much else can be done now until this runs it's course IMO.

I honestly wonder if the death rate is actually 2%. Everything I have read says for most people it basically shows up as a bad cold and who goes to the doctor for that?

Everyone, now. The part that worries me is that although we have better quality healthcare than a high percentage of the world, it's still easy for it to get overtaxed.

I've got to fly to Vegas and do a trade show in about 3 weeks. Although I'm generally healthy I did have a cardiac incident that was likely related to a West Nile infection about 6 years ago. The doc told me at the time to be cautious around viruses and get any vaccines I could. Also, Vegas, playground of Asia, is a cess pool on a good day. So...yeah, I'm a little worried. But I also work with disinfectants every day, so I understand about exposure routes and best practices, so I'll be doing what I can assuming they haven't freaked out and shut things down by then. Long term, my wife and I both work in jobs that don't interface with the public and we don't have kids, so we can do a better job of isolating ourselves than many.

We have a C-Section scheduled on Monday. We're not panicking. We are being overly cautious. Seeing as our firstborn was killed by a virus that attacked her heart (we think, we do not know), we are being overly cautious on purpose.

My wife works in a hospital. Last week she refused to care for a patient that had A coronavirus (not Covid-19), which her co-workers completely understood - another Dietitian took that case. My wife took this week, and Thursday and Friday of last week off from work. I am working from home this week.

For the past month or so, we have been washing our hands about 15 times a day. Her last time in public was a week ago. My last time in public without gloves on was on Sunday - the exception was when I had to go to traffic court yesterday; I brough a tiny bottle of purel with me and sanitized my hands every time I touched anything. Later today I have to go to the hardware. I'll be wearing my gloves the entire time. At least in Chicago in February, I doubt anyone will look at me funny wearing gloves everywhere.

Hi mtn,

Good luck with next Monday’s delivery…I’m super happy for you two.

My wife and I needed a C-Section with our second daughter as she was in a Frank Breach position.

The doctors’ let me scrub up and watch. I’m not a tough guy and yet nothing grossed me out so I recommend you participate as much as possible.

Doctor – Hey, do you want to see one of her ovaries?

Me – Is it safe?

Doctor – Absolutely.

Me – OK then.

Mrs. RX Reven’ – What are you guys doing down there (she can’t see around the tent made out of sheets).

Me – Honey, you really are beautiful on the inside.

Doctor – Hehehe, stop man, you’re going to make me mess up.

I'm not sure an encroaching virus with a 2% mortality rate is something to be as flippantly dismissed as some of y'all. If 2% of the people you know died tomorrow would it still be a joke? I hope that never comes to pass, but some of you are putting way too much stock in Big Daddy Governments ability to save you, cause they do such a good job elsewhere!

Evidently I made the title of the thread wrong, a better title would have been "when is it time to prepare?" Panic was the wrong word, but if things continue the direction they are headed it will impact every one of us.
