We have an Xbox 360 with a 4GB drive. Bought a game today that needs at least 2GB of free space to load. We don't have even close to that. I plugged in a 64GB external drive and tried to load it on that, but the game seems to only want to load onto the internal hard drive. What's the grassroot-iest solution to this problem?

A laptop hard drive to put internally......they can be a bit cheaper than the Xbox branded ones. Just have to make sure they're compatible.
Sometimes a thumb drive can take the internal hard drive's place, but not always. I am guessing the game you're attempting to use says "Hard drive required for gameplay" on it.
This is why the least capable 360 I've ever purchased had a 60gb drive on it. (250gb currently)
Move your saved stuff to the thumb drive, then load the new game. not all thumb drives give you the full memory. it was a while ago, but I had a few that should have worked, but didn't. then bought one that worked right.
Finally bought a new 360 (not used ones that keep failing). Had a 250 or 320GB internal HDD waiting that I found online for $50-60. Problem solved.

That doesn't always work though. If the game requires an internal hard drive, most of the time its specifically looking for that instead of the other options.
I used my pre-slim Xbox 360 hard drive (the one that snaps onto the side). I bought a Xbox 360 slim harddrive case on amazon. I think it was like $6 to purchase and have shipped to my house. Then I installed the old harddrive in the new case and it worked like a charm.

It took me all of 5 minutes to crack open the old case and install the hdd into the new one. But I do have some electronics screwdrivers with some bits, but I got them from Lowes or something locally.
