G29 is a good choice. There are some settings you have to adjust to really dial it in. Out of the box they are not good at all. The settings are in the game. It has to do with the dead spot and sensitivity.

I would have to figure out how to mount the wheel and pedals on my race seat which is specific to Fanatec and mounts with special allen bolts.

Fanatec CSL works with the PS4 and is awesome.

Yes, but it's 25% cheaper on Fanatec's site, though their shipping is a bit expensive. They don't run a ton of deals but if you can find one (I stalked for quite a while) you can get another chunk off as well.
I'm screwed. This is in the small print at the bottom of the Fanatec CSLE page: "Please note that the Fanatec CSL wheel base is not compatible with the discontinued CSL seat." Crap. Can't even replace it with a Fanatec. I guess I break out the implements of destruction and modify this seat thing to hold a G29.

Currently about $200 vs $475 which is not insignificant especially given that pedals are separate and another couple hundred bucks. That said, other than serving the same purpose the two aren't at all comparable. The Fanatec is exponentially better in every respect, especially when it comes to the tactile feedback which (IMO) is what is most important in sim racing.
In real racing you have 3 points of feedback from the car: hands, feet, and arse. In sim racing you'll never get the last one (in absence of spending $Texas on a motion rig), so the more you can get from the other two the better. The Fanatec does that extremely well, and for me at least makes things much more intuitive.

Not screwed. It’s an opportunity for engineering.

Too much for me to spend on a game, but I'd love to try one out.
If it came with pedals at that price, I may buy one.
Road America and me are not getting along. I've done quite a few laps, but the AI's are kicking my butt. Not sure if I'll find 4 seconds a lap to be able to run at the front.
In reply to T.J. :
Yeah, if I hadn't lucked into a perfect situation when I was in the market I would be on a G29. It just happened that someone local was looking for a PS3/G27 combo and willing to pay decent money for it, and that offset quite a bit of the delta between the two setups.
Sauce did you ever try a g29? I think it is a improvement over the g27. Not huge but noticeable. I think the peddles are more realistic than the g27.
In reply to dean1484 :
I didn't, and I never disliked the G27 so I'm sure the G29 is a great setup. I mostly suggested the Fanatec because I assumed since Argo has a Fanatec rig it would be plug and play with his current setup.
I've decided to sell the entire rig on Craigslist and also sell my VR headset that I never use. That should defray some of the cost of a new Fanatec set.
I have really wondered if going to a better rig would improve my driving in the game. I like to think it would as this would explain why Sauce is always faster than me.

My $40 card table setup is the reason you are all faster than me.
The lack of lumbar support in the Fanatec seat is why you guys are faster than me even with a Fanatec rig.
Anyone else have a scouting report from Road America?
I started over with the default setup this evening, and after a few changes things seem to be better. Mostly, the curbs are not instant death like they were with my other setup and that helps a lot. I'll have to try it for more than a few laps and see how it goes and whether I can hang with the AI's or not. I suspect they will still crush me on the carousel. I was losing 2 seconds in Sector 2 to the fast AIs and it was all at the Carousel and the kink.
I've not completed a full 30 minute race yet, because I keep crashing out.
I reset everything and reconnected it all. I ran a practice session at RA and the wheel didn't fail. I'm going to give it a try on Wednesday. We will see.
I ran the Ferrari and it was OK but the curbs send it spinning. I messed around with the Benz and it had no issue with the curbs and was about the same speed as the Ferrari. Not sure which one I will run. Don't know if I want to use up the car swap.
Right now I'm in the low 02's and high 01's which I know is slow as the fast guys online are in the 57's. Haven't tried a practice race so I don't know what the AI pace is.
In reply to Argo1 :
That's about the laptimes I have been getting. I got one magical lap in the 00's, but haven't been able to replicate it yet. My problem is that I have trouble running more than maybe 4-5 laps without some sort of incident. Not sure what it is about this track - maybe I'm allergic to it. Hopefully I can at least learn to knock out clean laps here even if they are slow.
T1 is proving to be tricky on lap 1. The AI's seem to enjoy killing me there. It doesn't look like I can qualify up front, so you go into it surrounded by AIs.
Were those on soft tires and how much fuel? My best on hard tires with 60+ listers of fuel is a low 04. In a 30 min race got an 03 on lap 13 on well worn tires but I was down to something like 20l of fuel.
Sauce I changed up the gearing and went back to the higher rear dif. This seemed to let me better set up the gears (in particular 3rd) to work best at 3-4 places around the track. It also gets me a much better drive out of corners and seemed to get the gearing optimized better for the uphill on the front strait.
Now all I need to do is fix the driver and I may actually be competitive.
Oh I finished second in the race that you bailed out of. The AI seemed to either be on the wrong tires and or made mistakes. It was definitely not because I was fast. I think consistent best describes my racing.
