Due to me being off work due to illness I started looking around the internet at browser playable games for single players. I ran across several sites that had nearly all the old pc games and I found that steam has the old D&D gold box games in a few collections and they play on windows in a dos box but instead of having to set up the dos box and fiddle with the settings I have forgotten over the last 20 years, they just fire up and work. I bought collection 2 because it has the game Hillsfar, which I remembered fondly, but the first game in that collection was Pool of Radiance, and I had never played it so I started it up first. It has all the documentation, code wheel, hint guide and quick start card included digitally. This is a game made in 1989 and it was such a joy to play and so much fun. I had forgotten how much fun those old turn based games were that couldn't really rely on graphics to impress you.
Now I have a sudden urge to play Eric the unready

I do love old games.
Since back then the tech wasn't there for impressive graphics, they were focused on gameplay and story telling.
Of course growing up with a ZX spectrum might have colored my views a bit

Indeed! That was a fun game. I haven't thought of it in years. Thanks for the flashbacks and I can still hear the music.
BTW: Another game like that was Discworld. Loved that, too.
