I played BeamNG.drive the most with like 7k hours. I played it at first with a keyboard, then a Logitech G920 and h-shifter, then with the Fantec shifter and now a Thrustmaster 458 Challenge racing wheel and thrustmaster shifter.

I  have put thousands of hours on rFactor.  Now I am moving over to Assetto Corsa.

Because this got bumped.  Here's some stuff you guys who don't play AC with us are missing out on:

After several seconds of thoughtful consideration, I think I'm going to have to give this a closer look.  I have the game on Steam and apparently played a few hours a few years ago.  I'm reinstalling it now.  Something tells me there's an absurdly steep learning curve in my future, and a lot of dumb questions in yours.

Join us in the AC racing league on Wednesdays.  We are very accommodating and helpful to beginners.  We have a very short time driver with us already (you two can race!).  We are driving Mazdaspeed Miatas, which are pretty easy to drive, but do tend to lock up the rear brakes under heavy trail braking, so watch out for that.

Hmm. Thanks for the invite! I'm on the west coast and have a three-year-old who demands a certain amount of attention, but I'll sure chew on it...

Had to chuckle at the trail braking comment. I've been driving an AW11 for almost twenty years. Trail braking is not something I ever really learned to do. Sure learned not to, though.

There are an increasing number of west coasters... I foresee a more friendly alternative time in the future.

Oh, you will do fine then. cheeky

I am on the west coast also.  There is generally someone in the room after 5:30, we start at around 6 and we stay on until around 8pm.  You can jump in any time, but we could certainly help you before or after if needed.  There is some setup info in the first two posts of the AC thread (you will need to get on Discord also, for voice)

It would probably be easier for me to list the games I havn't played.

As far as the most hours, it's probably between FM4, FM7, and PC2.

I did spend a lot of time on Indy 500 The Simulation back in the day. Nothing like diving into T1 at 230mph using an XY axis joystick.  I remember doing one 100% distance race, and it came down to me and Fittipaldi for the last 30 laps.  At the last stop, he must have made a slight wing adjustment, because I couldn't touch him, after being faster the whole race.  I've never been so gutted from a video game since.

I don't have numbers so I can only guess at top contenders:

Assetto Corsa

Shift 2 Unleashed

NFSU2

4x4 Evo 2

Test Drive 6

NFS2

JetMoto (the question is racing, not driving...)

Since this got bumped again, I'll ask here.

I'm fishing around for a new(ish) racing game to play.  As noted a couple years ago in this thread, far and away most of my experience is in GT3, with GT4 in second place.  GT5 lost me with terrible handling physics, and GT6 / GT7 are focused way too heavily on online multiplayer, which I'm not terribly interested in.

I'm currently using a PS4 and probably want to keep it that way.  I could afford a PS5 but I am finding a lack of compelling titles to make it worth the investment for just a game or two.

I would be using the PS4 controller.  I do prefer a wheel, but my DFP setup is not PS4 compatible and honestly I probably wouldn't want to drag it out all the time anyway.

Here's the game I'm looking for:

  • A casual racing sim that isn't insultingly arcade-y
  • Playable on PS4 with a controller
  • Interesting single-player career mode or progression, that isn't an afterthought to an OM game
  • Basic tuning and adjustment is nice
  • Decent AI - doesn't even have to be that great
  • Relatively evenly-matched fields with no single super fast rabbit (I'm glaring at you, GT4 and up)
  • Minimal rubberbanding

It has been recommended that I get Project CARS 3, which is apparently geared toward controller play.  PC1 is a frustrating mess with a controller.

I also see Assetto Corsa Ultimate and AC Competizione are available for the PS4.  Is one of these what I'm looking for?  Is it compatible with what you league folks are playing?  Although I prefer to focus on single-player mode, it would be nice to have multiplayer options.

Thanks!

[edit]  I see AC Evo is scheduled for release later this year, too.

In reply to Duke :

99% of Assetto Corsa multiplayer is on PC eith extensive mods.  I don't know that anyone would recommend on console.

Dirt Rally 2.0 is fantastic if you are option to rally games.  It has cross play between PC and PS4 also - there is a GRM league thread (it's basically  asynchronous time trials)

These two requirements are going to be a problem. To make a controller playable things get arcade-y.

For the PS4 I would look at project cars 2. Way better with a wheel but ok with a controler and meets just about al your other needs.

Rally Championship 2000. A full recreation of the British Rally Championship with no easy mode - full length stages with no mid-stage save capability, car damage with limited time to repair at service, properly modeled hazards, even night stages where your lights would start to flicker if you beat up the car too much or you could lose your light pod in a crash.

The only video game that really makes me sweat.

That was a good one. Still have the original box with the CD, from back when they were HUGE.

A ton of Colin McRae Rally 2, and strangely the original MAFIA - it was INSANELY fun driving around those old barges with a G25 wheel and shifter. I swear that thing had better car physics than most 'sims' of its time. Unfortunatly the sequels went too arcadey.

The one that I've put the most hours in though, was easily Live For Speed. 3 person game, amazing physics, mediocre visuals even for its time. Bought in 2006, and just set it up again to ease the wife unit into sim racing since she has voiced interest about eventually going on track. Works amazingly well with a Quest 2 and a wheel on an ancient 750Ti, while I  set up a newer pc to run AC in VR and hopefully join in some GRM races.

- Wife's first run had mixed results. She got huge motion sickness, but claims she liked it and wants to try again. We'll see how this turns out.

I have 12120 official laps in iRacing, with probably equal or greater numbers in practice and leagues that aren't tracked.  If you go by the time spent in SteamVR, I probably have ~7000 hours on track.

I'm up to 22207 laps now.  I can quit whenever I want, honest!

In the spring of 1988 I was hit by a drunk driver and broke my back (pretty minor as those things go). I was laid up for about a month and had a new IBM XT PC at my disposal. I had one game - Test Drive. I liked the Lotus the best. It wasn't the fastest, but with keyboard controls I could always do best with it.

In 1994 I got to be the cover talent for Grand Prix 500 II - a terrible PC motorcycle racing game. The shot is me on my 1989 FZR1000 duplicated and edited. Sadly, the editor failed to remove the mirrors. 😂

Recently I started playing automobilia 2, I like however I wish there was more of a selection of tracks/cars some of the ones on the base I am not a big fan of, I have found a way if there is to mod the game like I have done in the past for GTR2 and others.
