I bought this GS400 as my first bike in March of 2015. Previous owner added clubman bars, slip-on mufflers, and cut the rear tail section off. Drum brakes are adequate at best.
Took it for a cruise on Christmas when it was 65 degrees out. One of the carbs leaned out and blew a hole in the piston at 9k rpm. That was fun.
I YZ250 motor laying around from a go-kart project that I got from a friend that passed away. He was a huge 2-stroke fanatic and rode a Yamaha RZ350. He would have loved to see this motor swap.
I found a used FMF expansion chamber and used the stock muffler.
Added the radiator on the side, as there's not too much room between the front tire and exhaust.
Needs a few more odds and ends and it'll be ready to ride again!
This is Awesome! Plans for a stator/Lights/Etc? Very cool.
That is sweet. I am having terrible thoughts of similar excursions with an old UJM and probably a KTM 300+ 2 stroke

As of right now, I was just going to use a total loss separate electrical system. The stator on these only outputs 35W, and an upgraded stator is a few hundred bucks. I'll just use LED bulbs for now and keep it strictly for daytime use.

Now there's an idea that didn't occur to me. Neat-o
I like the way you think, please keep us updated
I have a YZ250X, and I'm a huge 2 stroke fan too. I whole-heartedly approve! What year is the motor?
In reply to doc_speeder:
It's a 1988 motor. Just rebuilt the bottom and top end two years ago. First time it's run since then!
Got it running last week. Took it on a quick ride to a local bike night for a road test. Found a 3600 mA-h lithium battery pack I can use to run lights. I'll recycle most of the stock harness for blinker relays. Headlight was converted to accept an H4 bulb, so I found a 30W LED bulb that fits in.
Exhaust placement is...not great. Inner thigh gets real warm next to the muffler. I'll extend the stinger and move the muffler down lower. I think the muffler packing is worn, it's very loud...louder than I remembered.

The radiator pn my Ducati is a lot smaller. Have you thought of finding a smaller one?
In reply to markwemple:
Not really, not sure if it's too big or not, but since I'm not running a fan, I figure it'll help with sitting still cooling off from radiation.
That looks like fun! I bet it gets interesting when it comes on pipe.
killer! how does it idle? i have a street legal cr500 1990 that does not enjoy idling.
I think that silencer needs to sit under the seat and stick straight out over the rear wheel.
