Every freaking day, 30% chance of rain for my commute home. They predict it EVERY DAY ALL SUMMER!!! And it never happens. Unless of course I decide to take the bike to work. Today, I had to carry some large stuff, so I took the car, and I would bet a billion dollars that it won't rain today. I hate the weatherman. Tomorrow, I am riding and if I get wet all the way home, I will laugh and enjoy myself!
You're in the wrong 30% of Pittsburgh.
60% is my cutoff, any less of a chance and Ill ride. I figure as long as I make it to work dry who cares if I get wet on the way home?
I don't mind getting wet on the way home, but to leave in the rain, walk around all day kindal mildewey and funky?
Got rain gear? Why not?
Dan
Around here, 50% means a slight chance. Until 90%, its not really expected. The Mississippi River Valley doors funny things to weather patterns.
My buddy is a wimp. He doesn't like to ride if there's a 30% chance of rain. Hell, that's a 70% chance of NOT rain.
I've taken the bike to work when it's dry, rained during the day while I'm working, the sunny when I leave. Fortunately, I can park my bike under the canopy of the loading dock.
I bought a bike a month and a half ago. I've ridden it twice.
I work east of home. I walk outside, look at the sky and figure if I can make it to work mostly dry, I ride.
PS.. Rain Gear is cheap
Edit: also not owning a car (besides wife's) is also a contributing factor

:( For sure. I think I've only driven the car twice in the last month and a half.
In the PNW, 30% chance of rain means it'll probably rain 30% of the day...
Rain's just water.
Don't wear wool or silk underneath your riding gear, and don't try to get away with just jeans.
It's more fun and scary to ride in the wet, and you won't panic when you encounter it unexpectedly later.
Now if I could just figure out how to drop the baby off at daycare on the bike...
I would ride more in rain however i have no rain gear. Really dont know what to get. ill start a new thread about that.
For now though i just ride all the time and when it rains it pours and i end up looking like i went for a ride in a washing machine.
The jacket i have helps but in time that gets soaked too.
Just part of the fun

Jacket, rain pants, gloves and rainx on the visor and it doesn't really matter if it rains or not
My experience when riding on a long commute is that a 30% chance of rain means it will be raining for 30% of the trip.

After shredding a few cheap-ass rainsuits that leaked from sporting goods stores, in brief rides, I dropped the big bucks on a Hi-Viz orange suit from Harley Davidson. It has kept me dry in several long distance rides in horrible storms (~150 miles during an Iron Butt ride, for one).
This guy has it figured out

I don't do a lot of bike riding in the rain... But I don't pass up sailing until there is a 90% chance of rain... and it is expected to stick around all day..
Some of my best days on the lake were 60% chance of rain..
But then again.. I am looking for wind.. so I ain't sure that applies here..
The right exhaust pipe is trying to escape on my Honda, so I haven't ridden for several weeks despite really nice weather. Just need to go to the hardware store and get a pair of locknuts. Maybe I'll do that tonight...
We get it all the time with autocross events. In the summer, in Colorado, it's likely to rain somewhere at some point in the afternoon. We had an event last weekend. I could see it raining all around, but we only got a few drops. You just never know.
rain man said 70% rain today....didn't get wet and rode all day, guess I was in the 30%
It's raining right now and I'm still going to ride to work. berkeley it, it's only water
