I think this is my first sprockets post.

Against all rational thought I picked this Spree up last week for $300. I guess I just have a thing for goofy scooters and mopeds. From the lack of a kickstart it's an 84 or 85. It's got 4500 miles on it and runs just fine. It needs a front brake cable and a bulb for the tail light to be streetable. A proper throttle cable wouldn't hurt either as the current one is off a different scooter.

Plans are to get it titled, tagged, get my motorcycle endorsement and rock it out on my 7 mile commute to work once it warms up. I managed to find a route that keeps me off main roads for 90% of the ride so I don't die.

Should be fun!

Is it a 2 stroke? If it is, a nice expansion chamber should wake it up.

Keep us updated on getting it titled and take the MSF course if you can, it's worth it.

What size engine? If it's under 50, most states don't require a cycle endorsement, or tag, or title.

I know some of those came with bigger engines.

I also believe that GA has discontinued the practice of titling 2-stroke vehicles for the street, so you may want to check with your Gov to see if you even can.

IIRC, Spree's were all 49cc, and two stroke.

From GA DDS (aka DMV) :

Mopeds

A moped is any motor driven cycle with an engine not exceeding 50 cubic centimeters (3.05 cubic inches) that can propel the cycle at a speed not to exceed 30 miles per hour (MPH) and does not require clutching or shifting.

Mopeds are exempt from the provisions relating to the registration and licensing of motor vehicles.

Should mean no title, license, insurance, etc. I would recommend speaking with your insurance agent about liability, etc.

Unfortunately Ohio is pretty strict. If it's not on the "approved mopeds" list it's considered a scooter and requires title, tags, license, and insurance.

Tag or no tag, it looks like fun. So many want-to's, so little time.

Here's a good link.

What if you already have a 2-stroke titled for the street? Also what about old Saab 96s?

Good score! While on the back roads, it'll be a blast. It might get a bit scary on the main roads, as a Spree would only top out about 40mph when new. Have a blast and enjoy-and save $$ commuting!
