The '56 Fleetwood needs a new or rebuilt harmonic balancer. I got the crank bolt loose but discovered that it stuck again after a half a turn or so. I ended up spending over an hour rocking it back and forth until I finally got it out. The bolt is stipped and must have been put back in that way years ago.

My question is, what do I want to clean up the threads in the crankshaft? A blind hole tap, thread chaser, ???

Thread chaser if you can.   A tap runs the risk of cross-threading by cutting a new spiral off from the original if the entry is really buggered.

A chaser is designed to not cut fresh, but straighten, so I don't think you could do that with a chaser if you tried, though I'm always amazed at how hard some people try...
