Ok guys I still need to sell my car. I am in the Hampton Roads, VA area, and I have a 77 280z for sale. It is in project car shape, has some lowering springs, Susp. Techniques sway bars, new headlights, and a few other things. I have a turbo motor from an 83 zx ready to go in, along with an NA zx 5 speed. New clutch, new NGK plugs, new cap & rotor, new manifold, valve cover, and oil pan gaskets, new manifold studs and nuts, new heater core, and some other odds and ends. I NEED TO GET RID OF THIS CAR ASAP! The price is a challenge budget friendly $1500, but reasonable offers are accepted.
The black wheels in the picture will NOT be sold with the car.

It should go to your email address. I also replied to the email you sent me. Mainly what I wanted to know is if the car has a title and if there is any rust. Do you have pictures of the floors and frame rails?

Oh, that's the problem. I'm sure my old e-mail address is in my profile, so I will have to change that.
I do NOT have a title for the car...it was purchased in GA, and the PO didn't have a title, and I bought it with a bill of sale only. Luckily in GA anything pre-1985 doesn't need a title, so it didn't matter.
The car has typical Z rust. Most definitely not the worst I've seen (and I'm not just saying that, check out ratsun.net for some rusty Datsuns), but there is rust on the floors, the hatch lip, and a little under the battery tray. I can get some pics of the rust up here soon.

Ok, so I REALLY need this thing gone...I may have to part it out and scrap the body or something if I don't get it sold soon. Price is NEGOTIABLE!!

damn i really wish I had the money for this thing.
looks like I'm going to have to switch dealerships so I can actually make some money so I'm still gonna be without money for a good while.

what else does it need in parts to get re-assembled? running? it appears that the tranny/engine are in "mockup" state and not attached, correct? do you have parts for this or will they still need to be fabbed? what was the plan for fuel? any interest in selling car/engine/tranny separate? are there more pics in the pbucket album if you give us the password?

It just needs someone to put it all together. They aren't in mockup state because no mockup is needed. It's the same motor, just the turbo version. It bolts right in (L28 motor vs. L28ET). In the pics I just hadn't put any of the accessories on, I just put the engine in. I have everything needed to do the swap, I took everything I needed from the 83 donor car I had. I have the engine, non-turbo tranny, new clutch, manifolds, turbo, ECU, harness, new down pipe, turbo fuel pump, etc in order to do the swap. I was going to do a stock install, and I was following this write-up on hybrid z. I also have the splices for the ignition harness and the fuel pump.

The engine/trans are now out of the car b/c I thought I had the body sold, but that fell through. I am willing to sell the motor, trans, and other stuff separately from the body, so shoot me an offer!

I will try to get some more current pics up here.

This sounds promising. SWMBO sent me a pic message today saying she wanted, "this exact car!" and it was a 280/240z (hard to tell from pic, I don't know them super well obviously). I knew I had seen one advertised here and we are in DC so relatively close. Honestly, the biggest hitch is the lack of title.

What was your plan for that once it was running? I'm assuming it's not registered currently.

The wheels that are on it now are from my 240sx (the black meshies went on the 240 when I got it). They are only good for rollers, since the center bore of the front wheels is smaller so they don't sit flush on the hub face. Plus, they look stupid, so they are on there purely for rolling. I may try to find some other old Z wheels to put on it that can actually be used, but I haven't yet.

My plans were just to drive it. I had it registered here and daily drove it for a couple years with the old motor. I was able to register it b/c I had current registration in my name from when I moved here from GA. I have always wanted to get into autocross, and I was going to hopefully do that with it. But living in an apartment, starting a new job, having a baby, all made this a bigger project than I needed at the moment. My 240sx is a DD'able project with A/C, heat, etc... If I had a garage I would have it on jackstands, stripped down bare, but I am not able to do that. I am keeping the wheels off it because I love them and for sentimental value.

Oh, and no, it's not registered currently.

The fact that it had a VA registration, even if not currently registered is very helpful. That means that either a) there is actually a VA title for it in your name (probably an E-title), or b) va doesn't do titles with vehicles this old. If (a), then we can get a hold of it or a duplicate so we could register it in DC. If (b), then I should be able to just take the signed over registration to the DC DMV and register it. Either way, we're in business. Gotta talk it over with with the fiance and will let you know, but if you can check this site to see if you actually have an E-title, that would be helpful: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/dmvnet/title_held/intro.asp (will require getting a PIN if you don't already have one) and here's an FAQ about it: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/dmvnet/help_text/original_electronic_title-faq.asp

Unfortunately, I do not have a title on file here. They let me register it only because I had GA registration in my name. My registration card said "Please submit title" on it. When I asked them about whether my car was title exempt, they checked, and I believe VA's year is like 73 or 75 or something. In GA it didn't matter because anything pre-85 is exempt there.

So, spent some time on the phone with a very nice woman from the VA DMV. Have to say, even though it takes a bit waiting your turn, the VA DMV is very polite and friendly on the phone.

Here's the deal:

-We need a title to register it in DC. Has no value to us if it cannot be street driven when finished.

-You should be able to apply for and get a title based on the fact that you registered the vehicle in VA at a time when no GA title was issued per their laws when you moved. If you happen to still have the old GA registration in your name, bring it (and a copy of the GA law stating the pre-85 exemption wouldn't hurt either).

-This is about as far as I'm able (and willing) to go towards figuring out a title. We're definitely interested, but you have to take care of getting the title which it sounds like you should be able to do.

you can email me at my google email: josh(dot)sennett as well and we can talk privately about specifics if you prefer.
