Some of you may have noticed I can't get the j-series motor out of my head the last few days. So, as a purely mental exercise, what is the best car to swap it into?

-points for challenge budget possible

-points for street legality possible (say pre OBD2 or chassis older than the engine)

-points for off-the-shelf mounts/axles/transmission adapter/etc

GO!

If you get it out of the right Acuara TL it comes with a six speed and an LSD. You don't just want the motor, you want that whole drivetrain. I want to put one in my Accord.

Find a TL which has been rear ended.  Cut the whole berkeleying nose off the car.  Purchase small hatchback of your choosing.  Cut the whole berkeleying floor out from the front seats to the rear bumper.  Do this:

No "off the shelf" parts needed if you can use the whole buffalo and keep everything stock... except the metal connecting it all, of course.

I'm gonna throw out the boring answer: 6th gen accord with j35. Bonus points for manual-6 conversion.

Since I happen to have both an odyssey and an x1/9 at my house, I made some quick measurements last night.

J series engine and transmission from front pulleys to end of trans case = about 34 inches

Inside distance between rear frame rails of x1/9 = about 33 inches

J series motor also goes about 20 inches forward of wheel centerline, which would also be a serious problem on the fiat. Now you could move it back a little with a bend in the CVs, but the axles are already going to be really short in an x1/9.

Major surgery would be required - not like fitting a 500 CI eldorado drivetrain, but still much more than plopping it in.

THIS is sooo of interest to me! I, too, would like to grab a J series motor and throw it in the back of something! Looking forward to the build!

In reply to Robbie :

Subaru 5 speed.  I'm going to use the 818 mid-engine conversion idea.  Just with a J-series engine instead of the Subaru engine.

In reply to 79rex :

It would be cool, but they're SO tiny I doubt it would even come close to fitting. J series aren't terribly compact engines.

Drop it into the front of a CRX.

CRX HF was only 1800 lbs to begin with, and there is juuuuust enough documentation out there so you can avoid any major problems.

Too easy? Fine, drop it in the back of a CRX...

I like the Miata the best. Something different would be this car.

I'm actually planning on doing an engine swap with a Rx-8  someday.
