As usual, while working on a car that wasn't previously maintained by myself something broke. I picked up an 02' Saturn SL today and went about fixing the front brakes; the passenger side was replaced without a hitch but the drivers side gave me some trouble. The upper caliper bolt broke off and does not want to be removed from the caliper bracket, which I can understand - but while removing the bracket I took a closer look at the caliper myself and found a small tear (1/4 inch) in the seal around the piston. Is that seal critical? I'm betting it is just a dust boot. I put the new pads and rotors on for now and the brakes have improved already, so that is progress.

The seal is just a dust seal. Its not unusual for them to be a bit torn, but its not really good, either. Get moisture and dirt in, piston rusts and won't retract, buy new caliper next time you need pads.
