I'd like to relocate the coolant tank,24v swapped and now I'm adding a powerdyne supercharger and the space required for an airfilter is non existant.I've already removed the ABS controller(no worky anyways)but no where near enough space yet for a filter.I don't want to drill a 4" hole on the car nor run a filter under the car for many reasons.
I have an aluminum E36 rad, needed so I can have the upper neck cut and rewelded 90 degrees to avoid the charger itself.I'm wondering if a vertical E36 coolant tank(the separate from the rad ones)could be used but not sure how tall they are to fit just by the drivers side endtank to avoid running coolant lines across the engine bay.
Thoughts??
Could you use an 318 (M42) radiator with the integrated tank?

Nope, like I mentioned the aluminum rad I have is needed so it can be easily modded to clear the supercharger.

What e30 did you start with? I've got an '86 eta w/ coolant tank on passenger side but I'm not sure if other e30's have the mounting tabs on the strut tower. If you're ok with a welder, it'd be easy to add.
Mines a late model so no tabs in the battery tray area for the early model tank(not wanting to weld or drill holes in this car if I can help it),I think an e36 tank might work and avoid looping the bigger drain line across the engine bay.
With my M42 I run an e36 M3 radiator with an M20 tank mounted on the driver's side of the bay on the front of the wheel arch (replacing the M42 rad with integrated tank). If your ABS stuff is gone, you should have room to fit it there. Not sure how the host routing is on your car though. Here's a picture of my setup:

I have much less room than you(;)
I can't find the dimensions of the e36 vertical bottle anywhere online,I live in northern Ontario so no wrecking yards littered with e36's to go and rape.Might just be best to get the early E30 bottle and try and find a way to route the hose.

What supercharger is that?
In reply to bluej:
Powerdyne E36 kit to match the engine.
Why against drilling holes? Practically speaking, do you realistically think that you'll ever want to undo things / restore the vehicle to stock?
Haha, trying to avoid doing something I might regret later...I intend to keep this car a very long time.
Looking for extra large burial plots....
While true, it is also nto too difficult to repurpose holes sometimes. Or maybe you can consider a cooling system alteration to be a "forever" thing no matter what drivetrain you have.
At least, that is how I justify making metal modifications. The first is the worst. Not just for personal cars either. Believe you me, I spent maybe five minutes of staring at the rust-free floor of a B-body Mopar, Sawzall in hand, knowing what I had to do, nay, what the car's owner was paying me to do... just thinking "I'm going to do WHAT???"
Another vote for M42 rad. I would be very suprised if it didn't fit.
In reply to Knurled:
Oh I've cut some very large holes in cars but they are always race only junkers I didn't really car about and replace nearly as often as socks.
The rad I have is only a few months old,not buying another rad just to find out the upper hose won't miss the sc...its the reason I bought this rad in the 1st place knowing I'd be modifying that outlet.Plus the plastic tanked rad that was in this car sheared off the plastic outlet and left me stranded at an out of town autox event.I like replacing broken parts with ones that won't leave me stranded in exactly the same way at some point if at all possible.
I was hoping someone could tell me how tall the e36 upright tank is,I'm cool building an aluminum bracket and welding that to the rad end tank to mount it.A new one of those is cheap($20 on ebay)vs the early E30 tank which is nearly $100...I can't see how they can justify that price looking at it.
Get one of those fill necks that splices into the upper hose, plug the vent on the radiator, and run a non pressurized tank of whatever shape you want, wherever you want?

WRX tank might fit in the space shown. They sit on the left side of the rad in a Subaru
