The price on this bastard child of a Corvette and a STS has dropped from North of $100K when new, to under $20K for a decent example.  I know, you can get a 2004 Z06 for that money and it will outperform it handily.  But the XLR has a much nicer interior for a DD, and the top retracts, and 446 supercharged HP is nothing to sneeze at.

Awesome daily supercar, or the Cimmaron of its day?

Wow, they were that expensive when new?  I thought they were cool. I was also 14 years old and thought Chevy ‘s SSR was cool.

Price out repairing that roof assembly. I have almost been given XLR's that need roof repairs for 40-50% under market pricing they are that bad.

XLR-V still makes me happy in a weird way to see on the road though.

They're cool, but others have pointed out some issues with them.  And I've never seen one that wasn't driven by a cigar-chomping old guy.

I'd happily take an STS-V though.  And the XLR-V is cool too.  Something about a Northstar with a blower makes me happy.

Holy shortfalls! That's insane!

Someone up the road from my parents has one that I see fairly regularly. Cigar chomping old guy, FWIW.

I don't see the appeal, personally, aside from the weird factor. A 'vette just seems better in every way, even looks and im not a huge fan of the C6 style. And don't these have the Northstar instead of the LS?

Edit: E36 M3 balls not shortfalls. Stupid auto correct.

So what you’re saying is buy an xlr with good taillights and a working top, sell those bits and have a free car with trailer taillights and a supercharged northstar?

I've been trying to talk people in real life into buying an STS-V for a couple of years because I reeeeealy want to spend some time in one but purchasing one would require me moving into the back seat on a semi-permanent basis. They're awesome. Someone here should get one.

The STS-V has only one fault IMHO.....the front calipers are on the wrong side of the rotor.....the SCchg'd northstar makes way up for that.....even if it is ONLY 469hp...... wink

So it's an old chick magnet?  There's a lot of coded language in that post.

Is this one of those times when the real deal is the smart deal?  These seem like a cubist take on the Mercedes SL, the R129.  The Merc seems like a better proposition to me.

Too bad Toyota never sold the Lexus SL300/400 with a cloth top...

Awesome daily supercar, or the Cimmaron of its day?

Why not both? The later model Cimarron was cool, i dont care what anyone says. I may be one of the only people on this forum who has owned both a Cimarron and another manufacturer's competing products from the same period. I think it was just ahead of its time, to be honest. Kinda like how a Pontiac Aztek was the best crossover GM made in the year 2000 and there are good-selling products today that mirror many of its attributes. And the Chrysler Pacifica was a great idea and GM proved it by selling a bajillion Traverse/Acadias. Etc etc. Misunderstood products that objectively performed well enough that were spurned for blazing an unintuitive trail but turned out to predict the future.

The XLR itself.. I don't dislike it but it comes from a period before GM had figured out how to properly differentiate Cadillac interiors from more plebeian GM products. Maybe it's also largely down to who it was marketed to, but i just find the interior very plain and boring.  Having said that, i would definitely rather have an XLR than a run of the mill c6.

Take a Corvette, trade some performance for more comfort and luxury. Parts and prices aside, if I was only going to use it for the street, I would be tempted to take one over a Corvette.

Does this mean I am getting old?

Yeah, these are Northstar only. And only the XLR-V had the supercharged Northstar.

What made it so cool back then that came out was that the c5 had much softer body lines. I remember when these came out and I commented to someone that it looked like a corvette that Darth Vader would be proud to drive. (A good thing). It was also the precursor to the direction that the body line cues of Cadillac were going to go to the present day. It is one of those cars that I am sure has a great story behind it with in GM and will be looked at as a turning point for Cadillac.

On a side note there is one living somewhere near me. I see it with some frequency every summer.

There's a guy with an XLR-V that I've spoken with a couple of times at local car shows. His is semi modded for HPDE style track days, and he's taken it on One Lap, or Power Tour, or both I can't remember.  For what it's worth, He looks a lot more like Bob Marley than "Cigar chomping old white guy".

Why does everyone get surprised that expensive cars are generally owned by guys old enough to be able to afford them? And that that makes them bad cars? Of COURSE old guys are who you saw driving them when they were new(er) as most younger guys can't drop $50-100k on a 2 seater. That goes fo Corvettes, too. I'd love a DB9, but even the cheapest ones these days need a healthy income in order to afford them, and that's not a young man's game. I may not be a cigar chomping old guy, but I'd happily be an old guy who can finally afford the toys. As for the XLR, I'd rather have that than the C5 Corvette, and to hell with the taillight cost, that's what insurance is for (unless you're doing something stupid and smash it up yourself with no insurance...)

I looked at the sold adds just to double check that insane price. One with a crack sold for $1700, one sold for $2250 and two for $2650.

Checking CoPart now for ones wrecked in the side or front, or below the tail lights.
