The governor of California, Jerry Brown, took a trip in a Prius that had no driver Tuesday. It took him to Google headquarters in Mountain View, where he signed legislation establishing requirements for the driverless car of the future. Are you trying to sell or purchase a used or new car? Checking out bill for driverless automobiles

Governor Brown spoke at a driverless cars bill signing ceremony after a journey by magic Toyota[/ur]. He explained:

Today we’re looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow’s reality. The self-driving car.

The law does seem like science fiction, even if the autonomous vehicles of today are not quite as technological as ones we have seen in the movies.

Google arrives

The meeting also involved Google co-founder Sergey Brin and the author of the bill, Democratic Senator Alex Padilla.

The purpose of the law was to allow for safety and performance regulations to be produced for when the vehicles become accessible. It does not technically allow for the driverless automobiles to be on the road commercially. Brin said: It’s basically a very long list of edge cases. We’re getting through a long list of eventualities.”

Anticipated soon

According to Brin, Google is more enthusiastic about the technology linked to the production of an autonomous car than the production of the car itself:

You can count on one hand the number of years before people can experience this.

Might be a huge change

Google has around a dozen autonomous automobiles traversing real roads and highways in Southern California. The company claims the vehicles have logged 300,000 miles with zero incidents.

According to Google’s co-founder:

It really has the power to change people’s lives, that’s why I’m really excited about it. There are many, many people who are under-served by our transportation system today.

The driverless car, Brin said, can virtually remove traffic accidents and give freedom to the blind, disabled and elderly. It also has the potential of making impaired driving and distracted driving into non-issues.

Autonomous vehicles that can speak with one another also have the potential of reducing traffic congestion and eliminating gridlock. An autonomous automobile that knows the location and speed of all the other automobiles around it can move more easily and smoothly in traffic than would be possible with a human operator.

Always a critic

A ton of critics exist for something this controversial, such as the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. It issued a statement that said:

Unfortunately this legislation lacks any provision protecting an automaker whose car is converted to an autonomous operation vehicle without the consent or even knowledge of that auto manufacturer.
